of love lit at United
During the last weeks of school
before the Christmas break, staff and
pupils at Hullett Central School
participated in a number of
extracurricular activities including
carol singing together in the
auditorium. Pupils from
kindergarten through Grade 6 were
among those from schools in the
area who travelled to Goderich to
watch the movie The Polar Express.
Vanessa Wilts tells us the story.
The Polar Express is about a boy
who claims not to believe in Santa
Claus. A train comes to pick him up
in the middle of the night to take him
to the North Pole. Along the way, he
met a nice guy and they became
friends. When the young boy nearly
falls off the train the nice man saves
his life.
When they arrived at the North
Pole the boy could not hear the bells
of the sleigh or the elves because he
didn't believe in Santa. But then he
said, "I believe" and Santa gave him
the first gift of Christmas — a bell.
For the rest of the boy's life, he
believed even when he was a
grownup."
Through the invitation of Mr.
Drennan, Const. Bob McCutcheon
of the OPP canine unit visited in the
Grade 7/8 classroom along with
dogs, McCloud and Riggs. Corey
Pollard tells some of the things the
boys and girls learned.
"On Thursday, Dec. 9, the K-9
unit visited and talked about how
dogs help the officers. Apparently,
sometimes the dogs, like kids, don't
listen. A dog's nose is 20,000 times
better for scents than ours. Three
different types of harnesses are used
with the dogs — one to find lost
people. one to search for drugs and
one for chasing subjects.

During the children's time at the

that Christ is the true meaning of .
Christmas was acted out for them by
Kittie MacGregor and Brenda
Radford.
Alive In Us was the title of the
message offered by Rev. Pat Cook
for Christmas Sunday.

God to once again find favour in His
children, the Israelites. The birth of
Christ is chronicled: in Matthew I:

18-25 and focused on Joseph
receiving the news about Mary from
the angel.
This Christmas time of the year is,
for a variety of reasons — shopping,
cards, food, etc. — a time of chaos. In
all of this confusion it is easy to be
distracted from the real reason for
Christmas, said Rev. Cook.
That first Christmas was a chaotic
one for Joseph as well. First he
realizes his espoused wife is
pregnant. After some soul-searching
he _ makes plans for avoiding
embarrassment for both of them.
When the angel brings the truth of
Mary's pregnancy, Joseph
recognizes the confusion may not be
over.
His acceptance of this plan -of God
makes Joseph a righteous man of
mercy. Joseph and Mary were
ordinary persons trusting in God's
will in spite of their fear and
uncertainty. Do we standup to the
test of God during our times of
chaos, mused Rev. Pat? Do we
remember to ask God for help at
those times? Emmanuel means God
with us. If we let Him work through
the good in our lives He will help us
in the chaotic times.
