On Dec. 1, members of the Huron-
Perth Shorthorn Association were
entertained Robert Reid, a goat
farmer and former journalist, gave
an amusing speech on the lives of
bachelor farmers.
He said throughout his career, he
interviewed several farmers and
realized that he had found some-
thing in the lifestyle that he liked,
"the wild open territory."
He said he would often write
about bachelors and one thing that
he noticed was that they had devel-
oped certain habits that to them,
made sense, but to others would
seem a bit different.
Reid said one man that he inter-
viewed. Harry, would bring his
chickens into the house when winter
came so they wouldn't freeze.
"I shared a lot of meals with him.
He enjoyed the simple life and a
simple meal," said Reid. "Potatoes,
corn and salt pork. He offered me
-gravy and to be polite I said yes. I
didn't know that the gravy would be
the grease in the pan from the salt
pork though," joked Reid.
He said he also shared many cups
of tea with Harry through hours of
conversation and "never did see him
take a single tea bag out."
"He just kept putting one bag in
after another. It was like the Lock
Ness monster. Something's in there,
His overall offering of fifteen steers

signed one red wf steer weighing
1,425 lbs. which sold to Dominion
Meat Packers for $86.50. His overall
offering of five steers averaged
1,438 lbs. selling for an average
price of $80.39. Eighty-nine black

John Martin, Lucknow, consigned
two limousin heifers averaging
but you're not sure what it might
be," laughed Reid.
Reid said since these men had
farmed their whole lives one of the
most important things he learned
from them was not to be intimidated
and with time things will work
out.
Another farmer he mentioned was
a man named John, Harry's bachelor
brother.
"He was the only person I ever
saw wear out his gloves and flip
them over and keep on using them,"
said Reid.
He said John lived in a wooden
shed without hydro and had to trav-
el to the ditch to get water.
Reid said he was a single-minded
fellow who could have done "things
more easily" but that was the
lifestyle he wanted:

"He never bought a newspaper,
but people would drop old ones off
and when he read them, old news
was new news to John."
He said that one year, John
received a radio and so he didn't
waste the batteries, he kept the vol-
ume at a minimum and his ear right
next to the speaket.
Reid said another impressive
aspect of these farmers was how
squarely they piled wood.
"You couldn't see daylight
through the pile."
Though their lifestyle is different
than most farmers, Reid said, he
learned to admire the toughness,
both physically and mentally, of
these men.
"I really learned a lot from them
and will never forget the times we
shared."
