THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 16, 2004. Roeteisoenders greet at United A pleasant Christmas gathering happened at Londesborough United Church on Monday, Dec. 6. Initiated by the UCW, three generations came together for a potluck meal and fellowship. Musical entertainment by several young children of the congregation made their mothers proud and warmed the hearts of the other adults with their talents, and self- confidence. Piano solos were played by Corey Pollard, Zachary Drost, Melissa Roetcisoender, Caitlyn Pollard and Emily Allen. They played familiar Christmas songs such as Silent Night, Jolly Old St. Nicholas, Jingle Bells and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, etc. Mikayla Allen sang 32 Feet and 8 Little Tails about Santa's reindeer. From the story of the Grinch, Kelsey Falconer sang Where Are You Christmas? All the children joined to sing the Angel Song and A Baby Is Born directed by Erica Horbanuik. A devotional time began with a skit. Playing a busy housewife, Harriet Shillinglaw admitted she hadn't had time to trim her tree. Enter Santa Claus played by Laura Scott to trim the tree with symbols of the true meaning of Christmas. As he hung a star, a bell, a wreath, an angel, etc. she/he told everyone to teach the children of today about the birth of Christ. When Santa put a candle on the tree, everyone in the room received a candle and they were lit one by one. The candles were to be taken home as a reminder of the real meaning of the season. Selected verses from Deuteronomy and Proverbs read by Lynda Horbanuik, echoed the theme of teaching the children about God as did the prayer for help and guidance offered by Marg Wright. A sing-song, led by Gail Lear and accompanied on the piano by Barb Bosman, sent everyone on their way in a seasonal mood. The Roetcisoender family, Jeff, Kim, Melissa and Kalvin, lit the candle of joy in the Advent wreath at Londesborough United Church on Sunday, Dec. 12. The boys and girls heard the story of the candy cane during their time at the front with Rev. Pat Cook. It seems a man rode into a small town some years ago on horseback and took over an abandoned store on main street. Everyone had their own hopes as to what kind of a store it might be but one young girl, Lucy, offered to help the stranger. Given the task of unpacking boxes, she soon realized the children of town would be pleased for the new store was Solomon's Candy Store. A new sweet treat to Lucy was the candy cane, a candy only sold at Christmas time. Londesborough's children recognized the candy is shaped like a J for Jesus or Joy and the shape is also that of a shepherd's staff. The adults in the congregation learned that the colour red signifies the blood and suffering of Christ while white is the colour of purity, of sins washed away. Waiting with Great Anticipation was the theme of the message brought by Rev. Pat Cook that morning. In David's psalm, Psalm 146, praise is given for the Lord in whom one can put their trust. Matthew 11: 2-11 tells of Christ's reassurance to John the Baptist that Christ is the one that John, the messenger had been awaiting. Rev. Cook noted that the . anticipation , of this season, the anticipation of Advent does not always match the anticipation of faith. John was expecting dramatic acts of Christ's ministry. Instead Christ came quietly and peacefully. Rev. Pat suggested that while people await the events of Christmas they ak AV" 4.‘ 14 NI "St Al" oleo* *. • go tab; 'inema-ke 0,3hop Make Your Own licer, Wine, Coolers, and Fruit Wine (6eMnr hcav AVI/CO fi -ab? 84 Kingston St., GODERICH 524-2323 should take action against the inequalities of this world and spread the news of and love of God.
