This game was played at the Blyth arena. (Jim Brown photo) The Blyth Atom Girls met up with Ripley on home ice Monday, Dec. 6. It was their second time playing the team and the girls showed signs of improvement. The greatest excitement of the night was when Ashley Higgins scored, giving the Ice Dogs their first point of the season. Rebecca Chalmers got the assist. There was lots of action for Jessie Walton in net as she made many saves, but the team couldn't come out on top. The girls travelled to Tiverton on Saturday, Dec. 11 and met one of their toughest opponents yet. Kelsey Kerr, Lauren Cronin and Courtney Middegaal had some good passes and skated hard. Alisha Middegaal came close to scoring, but the entire squad just couldn't match the previous game's excitement. Laura Higgins, Chloe Middegaal; Jeanette Plaetzer and Justine Reid did a good job on defence as usual, but the Tiverton team proved to be too much for them. The girls are still having a great time and are looking forward to an ice-cream party to celebrate their first goal of the season scored in the Ripley game. Big weekend or Lakers A Division of Ultimate Linings • The Huron Perth Lakes Major Atoms won three games on the weekend including a victory over the previously unbeaten Elgin Middlesex Chiefs 5-1. Coach Todd Goetz of Clinton was especially pleased on the weekend that the scoring was coming from a variety of players. The Major Atom Lakers also beat Cambridge 6-1 and Brantford 7-0. The games took place on Dec. 5, 6 and 7. Friday night the Lakers faced the undefeated Elgin-Middlesex and put them away quite handily with a 5-1 victory. The fact that the scoring was spread out with five different players getting a tally didn't surprise Goetz. "Our theme this year is, we put team first, and that has encouraged a well balanced attack". Mitch Vandergunst opened the scoring early in the first period by putting on pressure in front of the net which put the Chiefs back- on their heels. Ryan Watson and Shawn Moore set up the goal. Craig Martin, playing forward after a stint on defence, made it two, set up by Ray Huether. A few minutes after that he set up Travis Bowman in the front of the net. He then kept the puck to himself and the goalie had no chance on a top shelf backhander. The Elgin team then showed what has keptthem in first place for two years and put pressure on the team's defence. Goalie Drew Rienhardt came up .big during a shorthanded episode where he faced six of the teams' 18 shots. This took the wind out of their sails and all they could muster was one goal. - Saturday afternoon at the new Maitland Recreation Centre was a perfect setting for Laker day and the showdown with the third place Cambridge Hawks. Once again the team earned a 6-1 victory. In front of their hometown, Jake Ringette showed that he can carry the puck, shoot and score. Brandon Priestap and Shawn Moore each scored. Kaufman, Bowman and Huether had a repeat of the day before and made the Hawks pay. The solid play of blueliner Jeff McArdle made the job of goalie, Kirk Lamb a whole lot easier. Next, it was the Brantford 99ers at the Clinton arena, on a sunny Sunday afternoon. The Lakers were up for the game. laden Goetz crashed the net to poke in the first of the game. Huether then showed his puck-handling prowess and notched two more. Colton Pickett, filling in at forward showed his versatility by getting a pair. Craig Martin put home a slapshot and Ryan Watson showed that second and third efforts get rewarded and ended off the scoring. Reinhardt got the well- deserved shutout stopping 21 of Brantford's shots. The Major Atoms currently stand first in their division and third overall. W*-.0*' . . • ** •.
