DECEMBER 2. PAGE 25 Blyth UCW speaker tells of life in Jamaica Blyth UCW held its Christmas meeting Thursday, Nov. 25 with 14 present. After a potluck supper Christmas carols were sung with Elva Brown at the piano. Debbie Hakkers, . president, introduced Paul Hagerman originally from Mount Brydges but now with the London Conference Missions in Jamaica. He told how he and his wife Lori have spent three years there. They are now home on holidays until the end of December but have signed up for three more years. Paul is with the department of agriculture and teaches the natives how to farm. Jamaica is only 258 km. long and farms are very small, two to five acres. The church own some of the farms. He told of one two-acre farm which was very wet. The natives dug trenches for drainage and planted bananas. He showed how they grow and are harvested. The hurricane that hit the island last summer flattened all the banana trees. There are homes for homeless children whose parents have left the island for work. These children are all schooled until they are 18. All students wear uniforms. Christmas in Jamaica starts at 6 p.m. Christmas Eve when the grand market opens and people do their Christmas shopping then party all night. Christmas morning they go to a sunrise church service at 6 a.m., have lots of food all day. Their Huron County council has accepted an offer from Justice J. M.
