Staying alert, theme of UC message
Staying Alert was the theme of the
message at Londesborough United
Church on Sunday, Nov. 28.
The first candle in the Advent
wreath, the candle of hope was lit by
mother and daughter duo, Traci and
Communities in the area have been
buzzing the past couple of weekends
with tree lightings, Santa Claus
parades and Christmas home tours
sending spectators scurrying home
with plans for decorating, baking and
gift wrapping. The season is so busy
one has the tendency to miss the
enjoyment because of the supposed
"have to do's".
If you are shopping in Goderich on
Saturday, Dec. 4 drop into the
Suncoast Mall and support Camp
Menesetung by making a purchase at
their bake sale table. The sale will
run from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Interrupt your shopping and attend
A Christmas Tradition performed by
the Blyth Festival Singers and guest
musicians on Sunday, Dec. 5 at
North Street United Church,
Goderich. Tickets are $12 and
available from any member of the
choir. Music of the season and
selections from Handel's' Messiah
are featured.
Report cards for term one went
home with the pupils of Hullett
Central School on Monday. Later
this week teachers and parents will
be involved on meetings regarding
pupil progress. Next week the school
will begin their Christmas
celebrations.
On Dec. 6, the band from Central
Huron Secondary School will
entertain at the beginning of the
regular monthly assembly. The
annual Christmas concert by the
pupils starts at 7 p.m. on Wednesday,
Dec. 8. Mark your calendar now if
you plan to attend. Dress rehearsal is
Tuesday morning.
Gang meets
The Happy Gang Seniors of
Londesborough held their annual
Christmas party at the
Londesborough Community Hall at
midday on Wednesday, Nov. 24.
Sixty-four persons sat down to a
delicious turkey dinner with all the
extras catered by the ladies of
Londesborough United Church.
Along with the regular members
enjoying an early Christmas meal
were a number of invited seniors
from the community.
The hall has been beautifully
decorated for all happenings for the
Christmas season by Jane Hoggart.
The Happy Gang Seniors certainly
appreciated her efforts.
Five boxes were filled that day by
those in attendance with donations
for the Christmas Bureau of Huron
County.
As they arrived all seniors were
given two tickets for draws of items
donated by members of the Happy
Gang - .household items and
Christmas treats, etc. Betty Hulley
won the door prize, a nativity scene,
donated by Betty Fisher.
Mary East presented two readings,
one with a Christmas theme.
Grant Ellison of Goderich sang a
variety of familiar and favourite
songs accompanying himself on the
guitar. The seniors were often invited
to sing along with him.
Shelby Radford.
Communion was also observed to
begin the Advent season.
Don Goodall read the morning's
Minute for Missions.
Rev. Pat Cook's message was a
reminder that God's grace alone can
deliver the world from cares and
destruction. One's beginning and end
are in God. Text for the sermon was
found in Matthew 24: 36-44 in which
Christ warns that no one knows when
the son of God shall come again.
Therefore all are warned to be ready,
to stay alert.
Responsive psalm, Psalm 122, a
song of David, speaks of the peace
that comes from being a follower of
God.
During the children's time, Rev. Pat
spoke about the beautiful blue stole
she was wearing that morning. This
particular stole she wears during the
Christmas season as it features
appropriate symbols - IHS, a rose, a
star, etc.
When Rev. Pat was ordained into
the ministry this stole was a gift from
her daughter, Shari who has cross-
stitched- all the symbols making it
even more precious to Pat.
Next Sunday, Dec. 5 is White Gift
Sunday at Londesborough United.
The Sunday school will present a
pageant titled Starry Night. Gifts
offered that morning will be donated
to the Huron County Christmas
Bureau for families in need this year.
Following the service there will be
a time of fellowship downstairs.
Members of the congregation are
asked to bring potluck finger foods to
share - crackers and cheese, veggies,
fruit and/or squares.
The mitten tree is now up in the
sanctuary for donations of mitts, hats
and scarves which will also go to the
Huron County Christmas Bureau.
All ladies of the congregation and
community are invited to the UCW
potluck Christmas meeting on
Monday, Dec. 6 at 6:30 p.m. in the
church basement. It is always a most
enjoyable ladies evening. Bring along
an item, a Christmas gift, suitable for
a woman or child, to be given to the
Friendship House.
I Have you ordered your can of
caramel corn yet. The form is on the
table in the narthex or speak to a
UCW member.
Folks from Londesborough and
Auburn congregations and
communities enjoyed an open house
at the manse in Londesborough on
Sunday, Nov. 28. Rev. Pat and Bob
Cook graciously welcomed everyone
for fellowship, refreshments and a
tour of the manse. their home.
