Local Midget teams play in Silver Stick tourney
By Jim Brown
Special to The Citizen
The week-long 19th annual
Wingham Midget Regional Silver
Stick concluded Sunday afternoon
with Ripley winning the B-2
championship and Mitchell claiming
the B-I championship.
Eight games of the 38-game
tournament were played at the Blyth
Memorial Community Centre on
Saturday. The Blyth Bulldogs played
two games and the Brussels Midgets
played once.
Brussels faced off against
Wingham in the first game of the
tourney on Nov. 22, and were
handed a 6-3 setback. This was the
On Saturday, Nov. 20, the Blyth
Atom Local League team travelled
to Tiverton to play Kincardine.
It proved to be a truly exciting
game, which kept the parents on the
edge of their seats. Every time Blyth
managed to put .one on the
scoreboard, Kincardine would come
back to even the score.
Heidi Raynard collected a hattrick
during the game. Also scoring for
Blyth were Cody K. with two goals
and Jason Meier with one.
Aiding in the excellent offensive
play were Caroline McDowell,
Ronnie Vercruyssen and Nick
Brandon-Caldwell.
- Kennan MacDonald did a great
job in net, making many big saves.
Helping MacDonald was an
extremely strong defense team of

The Brussels Crusaders lost to
Shelburne this past Friday night by a
score of 10-3.
Scoring for Brussels were Tom
McNamara, Andrew Tait and Tyler
Campbell.
Sunday night the team lost to

only setback for the Brussels
Midgets, but would be the team's
downfall in regards to making the
playoff round.
Cory Chapman had a goal and an
assist for Brussels, with Brent
Wheeler and Nathan Prior netting
single markers. Earning assists were
Matt White, Chris Jutzi, Steven
Ropp and Tate Stephenson.
Getting the markers for Wingham
were Xavier 0' Krafka, Brad Carter,
Adam MacDonald, Ryan Shaw,
Jeremy Robinson and Greg Mun-
day.
White scored a pair of goals for
Brussels in their second game, a 3-1
decision over Chatsworth. Jutzi
added a single goal.. Jordan
Steven Ellis and Laura Higgins.
Unfortunately in the last few
minutes of the game Kincardine
managed to add two goals to the
scoreboard. The final score was 8-6
for Kincardine.
The team hosted Lucknow on
Nov. 22. Unfortunately, despite a
tremendous effort by Blyth, the
visitors ended up winning the game.
Lucknow started the scoring in
the first period. Blyth was unable to
get on the scoreboard.
Strong goal tending by
MacDonald and excellent work by
the defense prevented the visitors
from scoring in the second period.
The final goal was scored in the
third period giving the visitors a 2-0
win.
The team plays its next home
game on Thursday, Dec. 2.
Campbell had a pair of assists, with
Chapman adding a single helper.
Tim Burleigh was the lone goal
getter for Chatsworth.
With a 6-I decision over Shallow
Lake in their third game, the team
was optimistic about advancing to
the playoff round.
White had three goals and two
assists, with Wheeler getting a goal
and two helpers. Single goals were
added by Ropp and Xhase Chapman.
Cory Chapman earned a single
assist.
With Brussels and Wingham tied
with identical 2-1 records, the first
tie-breaker was recorded against
each other in the round-robin. By
virtue of its 6-3 win over Brussels,
Wingham took top honours in their
division. Five other teams posted 2-
1 records. Lucknow took first place
in their division and Drayton was
awarded top spot in their division as
they had edged past Tara. Lucknow,
Ripley and Howick were all tied
with 2-I records in their division.
Lucknow took first with a goal
differential of .7391, Ripley was
second with a .6250 and Howick
was third at .5882. Brussels finished
with a goal differential of .6000.
Ripley was awarded the wildcard
spot in the playoffs and went on to
win the B-2 championship. Ripley
defeated Wingham 6-3 in one semi-
final game and Drayton got past
Lucknow in the other. 5-2.
Ripley won the championship by
virtue of a 6-1 decision over
Drayton. Lucknow won the B-2
consolation with a 9-4 win over
Wingham. Ripley advanced to the
International tournament to be
played in Forest in January.
The - Blyth Bulldogs were not as
fortunate as the team from Brussels,
as they lost all three games.
The Bulldogs fell 5-2 to Ripley in
their first game on Nov. 23.
Darcey Cook scored both goals for
Blyth.
Getting the goals for Ripley were
Andrew Mooy, Kyle MacDonald,
Ben Larsen, Damon Zsinga and Alex
Bailey.
In the Bulldogs' second game,
they trailed Lucknow 3-0 after the
first period and went on to lose 12-0.
This lopsided win would end up
allowing Lucknow to take first place
in their division.
Blyth was assessed the only
penalty in the game, in the third
period.
Blyth fell to Howick, 6-3, in their
final round-robin contest.
Chris Bernard had a goal and an
assist for Blyth, with Blake
Hesselwood and Brett Bean adding
single goals.
Tom Hutchison had two goals for
Howick, with single markers coming
off the sticks of Mark MacEwen,
Dustin Gilkinson, Trevor Ruttan and
Blake McMillan.
In the B-1 playoffs, Mitchell
defeated Durham 5-2 and Listowel
edged Twin Centre, 2-1.
Mitchell got past Listowel 3-2 to
win the B- I championship and a
berth in the International
championship in Sarnia in January.
Twin Centre downed Durham 8-3 to
win the B-1 consolation.
Midget tournament co-ordinator
Grant Currie said this was the
second year for 20 teams in the
Midget division.
He added this was the third year
the tournament has used the Blyth
arena and it is an excellent facility.
"We are fortunate to have both of
these facilities at our disposal," he
said.
Those sentiments were echoed by
Bob Remington, who headed the
six-member committee who worked
at, the Blyth arena on Saturday. Other
members were Dave Bourne, Brian
Skinn, Tom Chester, Bill Glassier
and Jason Goodall.
Remington added the Blyth arena
is a nice clean facility, and the staff
is tremendous to work with.
"They do a great job of looking
after us," he said.
The fact that the Blyth arena and
the North Huron-Wescast
Community Complex are both under
the the municipal umbrella of North
Huron makes it easier to get the ice
time.
And, Remington added they
always try to have Blyth Bulldogs
play a couple of games at home on
the Saturday.
With next year being the 20th year
for the Silver Stick tournaments in
Wingham, Currie said they are
planning to have "something special
to celebrate the occasion."
The 19th annual Wingham
Regional Atom tournament gets
underway on Monday in Wingham,
with teams from both Blyth and
Brussels competing.
Brussels Atoms open the tourney
on Monday, with a 6:15 p.m. faceoff
time against host Wingham.
Their second game is Dec. 9 at
7:25 p.m. against Grand Valley and
then they play against Lucknow at
10:20 a.m. on Dec. 11.
Blyth's first game is on Dec. 8
when they meet Wallace at 6:15 p.m.
in Wingham. Their second and third
games are played at the Blyth arena
on Dec. 11. They skate against
Drayton at 10:20 a.m., then meet
Zurich at 4:10 p.m.
