New lift to help tenants at Maple Villa
A helping lift
Residents of Maple Villa in Brussels will find it a bit easier
to visit each other now that a new lift has been installed in
the apartment building. The lift, received from the
Supportive Housing Apartments program from Town and
Country Support Services (TCSS) in partnership with
Huron County, is designed to hold a wheelchair and it can
support three to four people. Thankful resident Velma

Residents of Maple Villa will find
it a bit easier to get around the
apartment building now that a new
lift has been installed.
The Supportive Housing Services
program, through Town and Country
Support Services, has been working
partnership with Huron County and
about a month ago, was able to
improve Maple Villa by making it
easier for residents to get up and
down the stairs using a new elevator-
type of lift.
Jan Warner-Moore, RN and
Supportive Housing Services co-
ordinator, said this lift is to assist the
"frail and older adults" who lives on
the second floor without having to
climb up and down the stairs.
"This lift will make it much easier
for those who are able to go and get
some groceries, do some laundry or
even visit a friend on the next floor,"
said Warner-Moore.
Velma Stephenson, a resident at
Maple Villa for the past six years,
said she had an apartment on the
second floor, which she "absolutely

cookies to bake, and parties to attend
-- you don't even know where to
start. Just thinking about it makes
your head spin!
Don't let your holidays be as
messy as the living room after all the
presents are opened. Follow these
tips from organizational experts, and
you'll conquer the holiday chaos.
I. Create a holiday calendar. This
calendar will be solely devoted to
the holidays. Fill it with all your
parties, shopping lists and anything
else pertaining to the holidays. That
way you'll have it all in one place.
2. Create a meal plan. Map out
what meals and goodies you'll be
making this season. Write a list of
ingredients you'll need to stock up
on and bring it. with you to the
market.
3. Write a list of chores. Organize
your home by creating a list of what
needs to be decorated, what rooms
need cleaning, etc.
4. Rely on gift lists. Don't risk
having to visit the toy store more
than necessary just because you
forgot to buy Dana her doll. Make
gift lists for every person for whom
you'll be purchasing gifts. On each
list, write down what the recipient's
wants, gift ideas, clothing sizes,
favourite colours, hobbies or
anything else related to that person.
5. Make a holiday binder. Don't
just stuff all those mile-long gift lists
and other organizational items into a
drawer. File them away in a holiday
loved," but due to health reasons,
was forced to move to the first floor
in order to move around more easily.
"I couldn't get up and down the
stairs without some help and I was
so upset when I had to move down
here because I just loved the view
from upstairs," said Stephenson. "I
like my apartment now, but I wish
we had the lift when I lived upstairs,
that way I wouldn't have had to
move."
Stephenson said she has as heard
nothing but good remarks' from
tenants about the new elevator.
"Everyone just loves it. It makes
living here that much better," she
said. "With the support from my
girls (support workers), the friends
I've made here and now this lift, this
apartment building is a great place to
live."
Warner-Moore said the only other
Supportive Housing program to have
an elevator is, County Housing in
Goderich.
"This is really a unique thing to
have. Everyone benefits from it,"
she said.
The Supportive Housing Services
program, which started on Dec. 1
last year, is designed to provide
people who require personal care
and homemaking needs with the
assistance to lead an independent
lifestyle in the comfort of their own
apartment.
It is a provincially-funded
program offered through Town and
Country Support Services.
A five-person flexible care team of
home-support workers from Town
and Country Support Services,
provides the required services to
Maple Villa residents.
Some personal services offered
may include personal hygiene,
preventative skin care, transferring
residents to and from the desired
location, escorts to medical
appointments and exercises.
Workers also come in to do some
housecleaning, laundry, shopping,
meal preparation and banking.
Although not all tenants at Maple
Villa need care, support workers will
come in twice a day if needed for
those who require help.

Villa or Town and Country Support
Services contact Warner-Moore at
