MNR receives report of black bear in Huron
The Ministry of Natural Resources
is asking residents of Huron County
to be aware that a report of a black
bear in the area has been received.
They advise people to take steps to
avoid a possible encounter.
A sighting of a single bear in an
agricultural field occurred in early
November in the Holmesville-
Clinton area.
At this time of year, bears will be
seeking denning sites for the winter.
They will still be active during warm
spells, but will begin hibernation
when cold weather arrives.
It is unusual, but not unheard of,
for a black bear to be this far south.
Black bears were native to Huron
County, but disappeared as the area
was settled. Healthy populations of
black bear exist in the Bruce
Peninsula and to the east of
Georgian Bay.
Black bears are a shy species that
prefer to avoid humans. Most
encounters occur as a result of an
animal being attracted to food
sources such as poorly-stored
garbage, landfill sites and
agricultural crops.
The public is encouraged to learn
more about black bears and how to
co-exist with the species through the
ministry's Bear Wise Program.
Anyone wishing to report a black
bear sighting can call the Bear Wise
line toll-free at 1-866-514-2327
(BEAR) at any time. In the event
there are concerns about public
safety, call 911 or the local police.
OPP have possible suspects
regarding a bold break-in at a
downtown building in Brussels.
According to Sr. Const. Don
Shropshall, witnesses saw some
people enter the vacant building on
Turnberry Street in mid-afternoon of
Nov. 13. They believed that they
were going to be working inside.
Later it was discovered that the
front door had been smashed and a
considerable amount of damage was
done. Police 'were called in to
investigate at 8:45 p.m.
In addition to the front door,
several windows at the back of the
building at been smashed. There was
damage done to the interior walls
and a number of broken beer bottles
were found on the floor.
The owner estimates the damage
at $5,000, Shropshall said.
Anyone with any information that
might help police is asked to call the
Wingham OPP office or
Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
