PAGE 16 THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 11, 2004.
The evening unit of the Brussels
UCW met Wednesday, Nov. I.
Nelva Scott opened the meeting
with the UCW Purpose which was
followed by a hymn Saviour Like a
Shepherd Lead Us.
Joan Golden, who hosted the
meeting, led the worship by giving
some background on where she will
be visiting in Guatemala from Nov.
16 - Nov. 25. She said the original
natives were Mayan, then she read a
Mayan prayer. She played a porticin
of a vision series program which
showed Guatemalan women
working at weaving, an art passed
down from mother to daughter.
Many raise their families alone as
their husbands, fathers and sons
have been killed or have
disappeared.
Many of their handmade articles
are sold through the United Church
at the Tatamagouche Centre in Nova
Scotia.
The second CD was entitled
Guatemala's Environmental and
Social Crisis. It showed the many
large farming industries that have
taken the most productive land from
the Mayan farmers during a civil
war. These farmers have their help
spread chemicals, many by plane,
over the land.
The Mayan Indians have had to
move their- farms up the
mountainsides, in order to, grown
any crop. They too have spread
• chemicals including DDT which
have caused illness and death.
One of the crops grown is coffee.
A group in Wolfville N.S., called the
Breaking the Silence coffee, import
fairly-traded beans and roast them,
then sell them in order to give small-
scale Mayan farmers a better return
for their products.
The Mayans want fair distribution
• of land, because the lack of same has
caused hunger and poverty. Mrs.
Golden explained she will be
travelling with eight diaconal
student ministers, as well as with
Kathryn Anderson, author of
Weaving Relationships, Canada-
Guatemala Solidarity. She will be
taking a hand-operated sewing
machine and over-the-counter
medications that if not opened can
be left at a local clinic. Her group is
going on a mission to try to help
some of these folks identify their
loved ones who have been buried in
mass graves.
Members need to keep her in their
daily prayers, because there is still
much political unrest in that area.
Mrs. Golden distributed an article
from the June Observer entitled
Justice, One Cup At A Time. It
describes how the United Church is
working with many other churches
to encourage self-help groups to
continue in Guatemala. She will be
able to give first-hand information at
the UCW's December meeting.
Joan Bernard read the October
minutes and Isabel Wheeler gave the
treasurer's report. Mrs. Scott had
received a letter and program from
Gloria Dow on Transfer of Life
membership pins. A thank you was
received from the Centre for
Christian Studies which Joan Golden
has been attending.
Mrs. Scott brought a report from
the stewards regarding the Schneider
Male Choir and Audrey Cardiff
spoke on the pies and cheesecakes
required- for the Nov. 19 Optimists
event.
There is a Lions supper coming up
Nov. 22.
Exchange Books are available for
program topics if needed.
A motion was passed to give the
Mission and Services and the
stewards each a donation.
A discussion followed over the
concern for the slippery floors in the
sanctuary. This concern will be taken
to the next stewards meeting.
The next meeting will be a potluck
meeting in the church basement on
Wednesday, Dec. 1. All the women
of the church are invited to attend
and bring a friend.
The meeting closed with lunch
served by Nora Stephenson and Joan
Golden.
