Thanks Despite the dreary day on Nov. 3, members of the Blyth Festival were all smiles as the Huron Pork Producers sponsored a 2005 Festival performance which amounts to $350. (Elyse DeBruyn photo) By Bonnie Gropp Citizen editor There's a new face in an old place on Blyth's main street. After almost half a century of sprucing up the local males, Lloyd Walsh retired as barber. Last Thursday, John Rae took over the business. Roe, vho is married to the former Nancy Stewart, a native of the village, operated a barbershop in Atwood for many years. Roe then pursued other careers until recently retiring. With Nancy's work as a resource teacher bringing them into the area, the couple decided to build a home in the, village and settle here. Retirement, however, was not working particularly well for Roe. "I found myself sitting and watching Geraldo and Jerry. It just wasn't good, so since -I had a trade certificate I though why not barber." That action, however, depended quite a bit on his predecessor's plans. "I would never have tried it with Lloyd still in business. He had such a large market share of the male customers." Saying that Walsh has "things on the go," Roe adds words of praise. "He is a fine fellow, a good barber, who was a real asset, to the community." In part, because of his respect for Walsh, Roe plans virtually no change to the business. There will be a few minor upgrades, essential to the building, but other than that the barber shop is "perfect just the way it is. This is an icon, a local landmark. Why would I touch it?" said Roe. "The price is the same, the building's the same. I don't intend to change it." Cranbrook minister speaks in Stratford Continued from page 9 McDonald-Lee was preaching at a church anniversary on Sunday in Stratford, Mary Kloosterman was the guest speaker in Cranbrook. She is the manager of the. YMCA in Goderich. The welcome sunshine on the weekend provided for long days for some farmers in the area as they worked getting more crops off the fields. The word snow in the forecast gives an added incentive to keep on working. Birthday wishes to Darren Evans, Nov. 10; Jenna Swart, Nov. 11; Shari Evans, Nov. 13; Janis Bray, Nov. 15; Shelly .Smith and Ken Knight, Nov. 16 and Alan Baker, Nov. 17. Welcome to main street The only change in the local barber shop is the name and face as John Roe took over for long-time Blyth barber Lloyd Walsh last week.
