PeeWee Dogs open season
An outstanding local goaltender
continues her hockey dream as part
of a United States university
women's hockey team and was put to
the test during two recent games
against other Ivy League schools.
Brook Wheeler, daughter of Gerry
and Brenda Wheeler of Brussels is a
sophomore goaltender for Colgate
University's hockey team, the
Raiders. She made 31 solid saves
during the game against Harvard
University's No. 3 Crimson team on
Nov. 5.
Although the Raiders lost 3 - 1
against Harvard, it took top-shelf
sniper shots from Jennifer Raimondi
and Team Canada member Sarah
Vaillancourt to beat her, said the
story in the Harvard newspaper.
According to the article, the
brightest spot for the Raiders was
Wheeler's play in net as she handled
nearly every shot cleanly. She limited
a number of dangerous second
chance opportunities too.
Wheeler had won her start Against
the Wayne State University team the
week before and coach Scott Wiley
said he went with his gut and decided
to bench pre-season All-League
goalie Rebecca Lahar and 'start the
game with Wheeler.
"Brook Wheeler is a sophomore
who just needs some time and we
have to find a way to get her to play
against good teams and see what she
can do," Wiley said to the Harvard
paper. "Rebecca Lahar is one of the
best in the country, but she's a senior
and I have to start looking for the
future a little bit and I thought tonight
was a good opportunity."
According to an article in the
Colgate University newspaper, the
Raiders pulled Wheeler in the end,
but Harvard came away with an
empty-net goal with only two
seconds left to seal the victory.
The Raiders finished I - 11 on the
powerplay while Harvard went 1 - 8.
Wheeler stopped 31 shots while her
counterpart, Ali Boe made just nine
saves.
On Nov. 6, the Raiders dropped its
third consecutive game with a 2 - 0
loss at the hand of Brown
University's Bears.
The Bears outshot the Raiders 27 -
20 and Wheeler stopped 25 of those
shots. The Raiders finished 0 - 5 on
the powerplay while the Bears
The Blyth PeeWee Rep Bulldogs
opened their 2004-2005 season Oct.
24 in Milverton.
The team looked like pups playing
dogs as Milverton outplayed them
from the drop of the puck. With very
little offence, the Dogs came out on
the wrong end of a 2-0 score.
Sheldon Reid turned away many
shots and -played excellently in the
Blyth goal.
After a midweek practice, the team
travelled to Chesley on Oct. 29.
Blyth opened the scoring late in the
first as John Lecomte scored Blyth's
first of the season, assisted-by Adam
Cronin. Blyth made it 2-0 as Tyler
Middegaal converted a pass from
Dallas Pennington.
After Chesley tied the score at
two, Michael McDowell took back
the lead with the assist to Matt
Chalmers. Colin Bokhout scored on
a point shot through traffic. Kirby
Cook completed the Dogs' scoring
from Cronin and Pennington.
Chesley added one more for a final
score of 5-3.

the Dogs' net.,
On Wednesday, Nov. 3, Blyth
welcomed Zurich to town for the
home opener. the PeeWees weren't
very good hosts, handing the visitors
a 7-1 loss.

coaches changed the lines hoping to
generate scoring. It obviously
worked.
Blyth opened the scoring mid-way
through the first, as Dan Dery scored
with Chalmers getting the helper.
Blyth got one more just before the
period ended, as Cook poked home a
loose puck with assists to
Pennington and Matt Popp. The
Dogs' good play carried over in the
second frame as Dery got his second
tally from Lecomte and Middegaal.
McDowell got into the act four
minutes later with assists to Lucas
Cooke and Cronin.
After the flood, Blyth kept up the
attack, as Pennington scored a
breakaway goal from Danielle Bean
and Dery.
Zurich spoiled Reid's shutout bid
16 seconds later.
Blyth didn't quit, and with 4:38
left in the third, Cronin scored on a
partial breakaway to the short side,
making it 6-1. Middegaal got the
assist. ,
With only 1:45 left, Lecomte
enjoy streak
However, VanWyk, with an assist
from Ryan Nesbitt brought the teams
even for a second time. Then with a
minute and a half left in The, game,
Dalton Richmond set up VanWyk,
who_snuck one by the goalie to seal
the victory.

solid goaltending was Dalton Carey.

6:30 p.m. against Drayton.

their hosts in the first period, while
