Delicious desserts were set out
ready as over 30 members and
guests of the Knox United Church
Evening Unit arrived for a special
meeting in the church basement on
Monday, Nov. I.
Following the dessert, Louise
Bosman introduced Mary Ann
Tangney from Hamilton who had
spent 12 days in January 2004 with
the Christian Peacemaker Team in
Iraq. Mary Ann started her talk with
an explanation of her work as a
community nurse with street youth
in Hamilton, and her desire to travel
and her interest in working for
peace.
She told stories of three specific
people she had met there, and their
acceptance of the work of the
Peacemaker teams. She told of one
man who had been tortured by the
Americans by having his toenails all
pulled out. Another was a young
American soldier standing guard at a
checkpoint who she later found on a
webpage as being killed.
The third was an American who
had served his time, but when
ordered to go back refused. He was
sentenced to 10 months hard labour
and dishonorably discharged. She
talked of the poor conditions in Iraq,
10 months after the end of the war.
Most have no hydro yet, and over 80
per cent of the men have no jobs to
go to.
Ms Tanguay showed slides of the
conditions in Baghdad, the people
and soldiers the Peacemakers met
and told of the conversations they
had as they talked on the streets. She
also told of how conditions in Iraq
have now changed, and the
Peacemaker teams stay mostly in
their apartment, and only go out for
food.
Many questions were asked and a
good discussion followed. She was
thanked by Sheila Nixon.
Muriel Coultes conducted the
worship service with the theme
Walking in the Way. Barbara
Anderson read the scripture from
Deuteronomy 10. Hymns — Walk
with Me, and All the Way my
Saviour Leads Me were sung.
Muriel read the meditation and
closed the meeting with prayer and
the UCW benediction.
The Belgrave WMS held its
meeting at the home of Freda Scott.
Alice Nicholson led in prayer.
The hymn was 0 God Of Love,
King of Peace.
Freda Scott read scripture from
Psalms and Ivy Cloakey read from
Isaiah. Mrs. Nicholson read a story,
Lest We Forget, and a
Remembrance Day poem from the
Glad Tidings.
Margaret Siertsema gave the
secretary's report. The treasurer's
FROM BELGRAVE
report was given by Mrs. Cloakey.
Twenty sick and shut-in visits were
recorded.
Roll call was a thought on peace.
Mrs. Siertsema had church
calendars for sale. She read a poem,
Memorial Day Prayer. Lead Us
Heavenly Father was read.
