Historic tour
The Blyth Festival and Memorial Hall was on display yet again as a group of students from the
School of Environmental Design and Rural Development in Gueiph gathered for a tour of the
building on Oct. 29. The group was also given an overview of local efforts in Blyth that enhance
the community from amalgamation to the future of small towns and villages. The Festival's
artistic director Eric Coultes explains different aspects of the Festival's operation to the visitors.

THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 2004. PAGE 27.
The Schneider Male Chorus of
Kitchener will appear in concert at
Brussels. United Church on Sunday,
Nov. 7 at 3 p.m.
The Schneider Male Chorus, one
of Canada's best known choral
groups, performs a wide repertoire
which includes music of the church,
classical, folk, spirituals and popular
favourites. The conductor of the
chorus is Laurence Rowbotham.
As part of the preparations for the
Christmas season, CBC Radio and
St John's Anglican Church, Brussels
present a reading of Charles
Dickens' A Christmas Carol on
Saturday, Nov. 27 at 2 p.m. in St
John's Church at the corner of
Turnberry Street and McCutcheon
Drive in Brussels.
In December of .1989, Judy
Maddten a broadcaster with CBC
Radio and her family had the
opportunity to read the complete
Christmas Carol. She realized that
once people grow up,_ they usually
leave behind the pleasure •of being
read to, and with that thought, this
one..."Wouldn't it be wonderful to
read A Christmas Carol to adults!
A few years after writing the
original story, Dickens shortened it
so he could present it as an evening's
entertainment. With the briefer text
in hand, and the support of her
colleagues at CBC radio, Maddren
set about mounting a public reading
with music.
Maddren organized the first public
reading in December 1990 to benefit
a local women's shelter. From that
one successful night the event has
grown and now is presented by CBC
Radio, in conjunction with local
partners, in over 80 communities
across Canada (as well as readings in
the United States) for the benefit of
local charities similar in nature to
those Dickens himself promoted:
children, literacy, less fortunate
families, education for all, and
health care.
The pleasure of a good story heard
for the first time (or the sixth time!),
