Cranbrook community extends sympathy •
NEWS
FROM CRANBROOK
the sympathy of the community
goes out to the family of Rev. and
Mrs. Edwin (Ted) Nelson on the
death of their grandson, Nelson
Kappes in a traffic accident on Oct.
28. He was Cindy's son. Rev. Nelson
was a student minister in Cranbrook
from 1960 - 1964. Nelson Kappes
was a grand-nephew of Grace Jutzi.
Our condolences to the Jutzi family
also.
Congratulations to Jenna Fischer,
daughter of Murray and Marlene on
receiving the Huron County Award at
the F.E. Madill commencement on
Oct. 22. She obtained this award for
furthering her education in the
agricultural field. Jenna was also an
Ontario scholar.
On Sunday, Rev. Theresa
McDonald-Lee, with the help of
Johnathan and two puppets, showed
slides during the children's story
time. They were of things that
happened in the two congregations
this past year for which Theresa was
thankful. Freddy the puppet and his
pal also had treats for the children.
The young and the young-at-heart
had an early start to Halloween with a
party in the Cranbrook Community
Centre on Friday night. All report a
fun-filled • evening with many
costumes, even one not quite
complete as the fellow was too large
to cover. Treats and games for the
children were a hit.
There was a good attendance at the
Ethel Halloween party on Sunday
night, with fun for all.
We had more trick or treaters this
year, and they were all very polite.
Now that the world" series is over,
and everyone had an extra hour of
sleep on the weekend, it's time to
start thinking of Christmas. There are
many area craft shows coming up to
get people into the mood. The Legion
and United Church in Brussels, as
well as Monkton Presbyterian
Church, are hosting shows this
coming weekend.
Don't forget Majestic's casserole
supper and card party in the library
on Nov. 4.
On Monday, Nov. 1 Geraldine
Siemon, Leslie, and Yvonne Knight
travelled to Kitchener to hear The
Ten Tenors at the Centre In The
Square.
Iv Birthday wishes to Brad Smith,
Nov. 3; Brent Wheeler, Allison Black
and Jill Speiran, Nov. 4; Willis
Knight, Nov. 5: Justin Morrison, Nov.

Letters remind of ancestors' sacrifices

sheds. To see the papers you would
think that there wasn't enough help
to take off the harvest. •
I was indeed surprised to see your
daughter Irene writing such a good
, letter. Give my compliments to her
and tell her to be good to that new
baby sister.
I had a letter from Mother the
other day and she was saying
everything was looking fine. She said
we had great corn this year. I wish I
could be there to help harvest it.
Well Agnes I shall have to quit. We
have not much news. I hope you will
answer soon as we like to get mail.
Hope this finds you all well. I will
write again when I get time.
Give love to all and tell Gertie and
Irene to study well and go to Sunday
school every Sunday.
With love I remain, Your brother

This was the last letter received
from L. Cpl. Chas. B. Forrest. The
next news received was "Killed in

Holland
Hello Billie Old Pal,
...You will see I am no longer in
Italy but now in Holland and not too
far from the Jerry but further than I
was a little over a week ago — as it
was too close for comfort. But us
Canadians in Italy really got the
Jerry on the run but there are still
some left North from here to clean up
on yet.
We have been on short rest for a
few days. I have slept in slit trenches,
straw stacks and where not. But now
since Jerry is quite a piece away
from here, I am sleeping in a stable.
It is not bad but smells a bit piggy.
You can be very thankful Bill that
you live in a country that has not
been touched by war.
I have seen some poor little Dutch
boys and girls that were starving.
One day in fact the first meal I had in
Holland, the poor kids and
grownups too were around on our
Meal Parade with tin cans for us to
give them something to eat. -It was
some sight to see them eating
porridge out of meat cans, etc. with
their hands. Especially to see poor
little boys around . Doug's age and
some younger. It sure made me feel
sorry for them but it pleased me to
think that my loved ones at home
were not starving like that.
It is a nice country here and not
destroyed as much as some that I
have seen. The people around here
are really happy to be free again but ,'
there are still quite a few Dutch
people to be made free yet — but we
have Jerry pretty well cut off now.
I saw some of Germany coming
here and is it ever flat, so I guess it is
all like that.
So I'll say cheerio and the best of
luck and health to you all.
From Your Friend
Uncle Alex
These letters bring to mind the
great sacrifices our ancestors made
for us in two world wars. Some
giving their lives so we can enjoy a
country free from wars. The least we
can do is pause for a few minutes or
more on Nov. 11 Remembrance Day
to remember them — and give thanks
to them who have gone to war to
ensure our freedoms.

At the time of the first letter his

residents refer to the Horseshoe —
