Remembrance Day • November 1 1
A Day to Remember
Canada's Fallen Heroes
Remembrance Day on November 11 commemorates Canadians who lost
their lives during World War I, World War II and the Korean War.
Canadians wear poppies and gather at war memorials across Canada to
pay tribute to their fallen soldiers. The first Remembrance Day was held
in 1919 throughout the Commonwealth. Originally called Armistice Day,
it commemorated the end of World War I on Monday, November 11, 1918,
at 11:00 a.m. — the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. From
1923 to 1931, Armistice Day was held on the Monday of the week in
which November 11 fell. The country's Thanksgiving was also celebrated
on this day. In 1931, M.P. Allan Neill introduced a bill to observe
Armistice Day on a fixed day — November 11. During the bill's
introduction, it was decided the word "Remembrance" would be used
instead of "Armistice." The bill passed, and the first official
Remembrance Day was held on November 11, 1931. Thanksgiving Day
was moved to October 12 that year. In the United States, Remembrance
Day is known as Veterans Day.
