FROM BRUSSELS
Bleary is the word that comes to
mind as I look out the window on this
November day. It's not quite bleak yet
and the world does look a little weary
with the trees now undressed and the
wet leaves messing up the ground. Yes
it's a bleary month that's coming,
With the help of many fine souls the
5Rs is in its new home as of Saturday.
There was lots of lugging and shifting,

ROOM FOR RENT
By Jo-Ann McDonald
Thursday night darts at the Brussels
Legion had 17 players taking aim at
the boards.
The first-place team was Ken Bird
and Julie Harrison. There were three
teams tied for second; Adam Smith
and Harry Smith, Darlene Smith and
Kevin Gross and Norm Dobson and
Lawrence Machan, who were the
eventual second-place winners.
The high shots were John Harrison
with 140 and Cassie Bootzin with
107. The high starts were John
Harrison with 80 and Catrina Josling
with 65.
Darts start at 8 p.m. and only cost
$1.
This Friday's supper is chicken
moving and carrying all done in good
spirits. It felt like the last supper as we
shared lunch at the old Mitchell
building - memories of shopping
there, the big paper roll for wrapping,
the toy section behind the curtain, the
tar tin and the big registers for heat.
Then the stories of the 5Rs began.
We laughed and added a few tears as
we remembered Wendy Martin, the
chaos of the beginning, the
community paint job (that is still in
evidence) and the nay sayers who
decreed that a thrift shop would never
go in Brussels.
There were little tales of the fun and
commitment that started the venture.
Of course it was a pretty determined
group who knew it was the•right thing
to do at the time, and just got it done.
Visions and hard work were there in

surprise.
On Saturday; there were 12
comrades off to Mitchell to
participate in Zone cribbage. The
highest finish was third place to
Sandra Josling, Julie Harrison, Lisa
Glanville and John Harrison. Placing
ninth were Dale Sauve, Jim Alton,
Lloyd Glanville and Helen Brenie.
Both teams will advance to District
crib in Blyth in January.
The other team was Glenn Bridge,
Norm Dobson, Mabel Willis and
Helen Dobson.
It was the general meeting on
Tuesday evening with Zone
Commander Shirley Chalmers
attending for the yearly visitation.
She inspects the minute books, the

sustainable way so that 13 years later
5Rs is just fine. So to folks with the
dream of the 5Rs we all need to be
grateful - Ida, Linda, Nancy, Carolyn,
Effie, Joan, Julie, Brenda, Marie,
Cathy, Mary Lou and many others.
Thank you. Come and check out the
new spot.
Halloween is gone for another year.
Time to tuck away the pumpkins and
hide the costumes and decorations for
next time. Lots of cuties were out and
about spreading smiles and joy as they
enjoyed the night 'of make believe.
Next weekend is a good time to give

A request for support for the

Friday, Oct. 29 at noon was the
beginning of the poppy campaign.
Donations for poppies go to support
veterans' needs.

your job easy as you can have one-of-
a-kind gifts and don't have to drive
miles for them. Ads will tell you the
specific time for each group so take
your time to visit them all.
Saturday afternoon is the common
time when all the groups are ready
with that special item just for you. So
make your life easy and get your
shopping done on the weekend. Then
you'll really, really look forward to
Christmas. Take care.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
Legion members along with Cadets

In combination of businesses,
clubs and citizens, I received a
total amount of $2,238.36.
I very much enjoyed taking on this
project, more the planting than the
fundraising. It's not much fun for
anyone to go out and ask others for
money, but in this case I had a 95%
success rate and had a great sense
of satisfaction and pleasure
dealing with all of you. I would like
to thank the school's principal
Heather Beattie and the school
council for allowing me to take on
this project and giving me the
opportunity to put my vision into a
reality. I have some money left over
that I will be spending in the spring
on yet another flower bed. Please
feel free to stop around and view
the school grounds and see what
your donations have achieved. I
wouldn't have been able to
complete this project without the
loving help from my husband Brian
and children, my parents Bruce
and Anna Hamilton, my brother and
wife, Troy and Shauna Hamilton for
spending many hours planting with
me. Also thanks to Sheila and
Rachel Cousins, Janice Machan
and Gail Wheeler for helping me
add some finishing touches by
placing mulch on our new flower
beds. Thanks to you all.
