Someone was desperate for gas money or for tolls or to chase their debts that they would sell their precious jewellery that was in the family for years for a little cash. The fruit of the casino was separating people from their money. I went a little farther and there was the Presbyterian Church. The door was open. A number of men were sleeping on the floor, while others were sitting around tables waiting for breakfast. I cannot say that that was a fruit of the casino, but what I can say is that the slum and the wealth of casinos are side by side in Atlantic City. Casinos were supposed to transform this city. What happens instead, every time a casino comes to town, crime rates go up. Two writers of antiquity wrote: "...gambling men are led to fraud, cheating, lying, perjury, theft and other enormities" (Tacitus and Marcellinus). Recently I heard a story about a boy whose parents were off at work. He got a hold of their credit card numbers and went on-line. In one day, he maxed out their credit cards for a total of $25,000. Was that good for that family? Another story I heard was of a family on their way to Disneyland for a family vacation. The father did some in-flight gambling and when they arrived in Orlando, the hotel would not accept their credit card, because it was maxed out. The family got on the next flight and returned home. Is this good fruit? Can we say that all of life is a gamble? Is there a difference between planting corn or getting married or playing the lottery'? Yes. The farmer, business-people and marriage partners are not depending on chance. They are using skill, energy and knowledge to gain success. No other person must suffer loss in order for these people to succeed. By way of contrast, the gambler's success can only occur at the expense and suffering of others; someone else has to lose. What does God say to this? God tells us to come to him. He owns the cattle on the thousand hills, more than any gaming house will ever have. He is the source of all wealth. Yes, we have a yearning that all is not well with ourselves. We all have a hole that we seek to fill. That hole can only be satisfied by God and him alone. The God of the universe knows and loves you and he wants to be in relationship with you. Seek him out. Let him capture your imagination and offer everything to him. In the end, you will not be disappointed in him. The God of the universe wants to bless you and he tells us to love our neighbours as ourselves, not to win, win for your own benefit. Seek the God of the universe, because in him you will find fulfillment as with no one else.
