Safety First Huron Perth will he

McGee Motors Ltd.. in Goderich on
Saturday. Oct. 30 from 10 a.m. to 2
p.m.
Trained car seat inspectors will be
available to check your car seat(s)
for proper installation and recalls.
They can advise you on ways to
make your child as safe as possible
in a collision.

their car seat instructions and vehicle
owner's manual. They will be
provided with information on• child
safety and be eligible for a draw for
a booster seat. There will be
refreshments and a supervised

CCNS - When it comes to your
car's safety, brakes top the list of
systems that need monitoring.
However, many people are unaware
of the signs that indicate a car's
brakes may need maintenance or
repair.
For routine maintenance, it's
important to check the vehicle's
braking system at least once a year.
A thorough inspection should
include brake lining wear, brake
fluid level, rotor thickness,
condition of hoses and brake lines.
brake and dash warning lights, as
well as taking the car for a test drive
to detect other potential brake
system problems.
It is important to be alert and
recognize the danger signs of brake
problems. Other warning signs
include an illuminated brake
warning light, brake grabbing, low
pedal feel, vibration, hard pedal feel
In Huron County. almost 70 per
cent of car seats are not installed
properly and almost 75 per cent of
Canadians don't use a booster seat
after their child has outgrown a car
seat. The use of belt-positioning
booster seats lower the risk of injury
to children four to seven years old by
60 per cent compared to the use of
vehicle seat belts.
When children outgrow a forward-
facing car seat, they should be using
a booster seat. Vehicle seat belt
systems are designed for adults;
children are too small to fit vehicle
seat belts properly.
A booster seat lifts the child and
positions the shoulder belt properly
in the centre of the chest, not over
the neck or face". says, Josee Cayer,
Public Health Nurse, Huron County

Health Unit. "It also keeps the lap
belt where it belongs, touching the
upper thighs rather than over the
child's abdomen".
While current legislation allows a'
child to move to a seat belt after 40
lbs (18kg), the Ministry of
Transportation and Huron County
Health Unit recommend the use of
booster seats until children reach at
least 60 lbs (27kg). Children are
usually eight or nine years of age
when they can safely use the seat
belts alone.
