Starting the week of October 25th,
the Huron County Health Unit is
offering free flu shots at school and
community-based clinics across the
county.
The flu shot program was
launched on Monday, Oct. 25 at
Wingham Public School, at the first
school-based clinic in Huron
County for this year. The school-
based clinics make it easier for
parents to ensure that their children
get the flu shot; parents don't have
to take a day off work to take their
children out of school for a trip to
the doctor's office.
For those families without a
family physician. school-based
clinics are a safe, simple alternative.
The health unit strongly
recommends the flu shot for people
over six months of age every year.
"The flu virus spreads very easily
.in the school environment", said Dr.
Beth Henning, medical officer of
health. "Every year healthy, school-
aged children suffer significant flu-
related illness."
The flu shot can prevent flu-
related illness and has also been
shown to reduce severe ear
infections in young children by up
to 36 per cent.
Henning explains that children,
by their nature and their habits, are
very effective at spreading the flu
virus to their classmates, their
teachers. and members of their
tamily. Research has proven that
vaccinating school-aged children
significantly decreases the spread of
tlu in the community.

hard in the 2003/04 season. The
A/Fujian flu circulated last year,
causing serious illness and many
more deaths than usual in Ontario
and elsewhere in North America.
All indications are that the A/Fujian
strain will circulate again this year.
Although the vaccine offered
some protection last year, this year's
flu vaccine is expected to be more
effective as it is well-matched with
A/Fujian. The vaccine will also
provide protection against the New
Caledonia, B/Shanghai strains.
A flu vaccination is normally 70
to 90 per cent effective in
preventing the flu in healthy adults,
and about 70 per cent effective in
preventing flu with fever in
children.
The flu shot is beneficial for
healthy adults too; a study published
in the New England Journal of
Medicine (2000) showed that
healthy adults who got the flu shot
reported 43 per cent fewer days of
The Brussels Midgets hit home ice
on Oct. 24 for what turned out to be
a tight contest.
The squad faced off against

3-2.
The visitors struck first, scoring

sick leave from work due to the flu.
By getting a flu shot, you are
choosing to protect yourself and
those around you, including your
family and friends who may be at
higher risk of serious complications.
Influenza, commonly called the
'flu', is a highly contagious viral
infection that causes sudden fever,
sore throat, dry cough, headache,
muscle aches, and fatigue. The 9u
can cause pneumonia and other
complications that require
hospitalization. Babies and young
children, the elderly, or anyone with
chronic health conditions, like
asthma, kidney disease, diabetes, or
heart disease, are at risk of serious
flu complications, including death.

Coaching staff acknowledged that
too many penalties hurt the
BrUssels' effort. However, assistant
coach Randy White said that for the
first game of the year, the team
didn't do too badly. "They were a

on the game and not the referee's
calls."
