Huron residents help protect water quality Residents throughout Huron County delivered their household hazardous waste to depots in Goderich, Exeter and Wingham on three Saturdays in August and September. The service is provided by Hotz Environmental of Hamilton under contract with the County of Huron. The hazardous waste collected included 11,800 litres of paint, 2,400 litres of motor oil, 1,200 litres of pesticides, and 2,130 kg of batteries. In total, 350 drums were filled with hazardous materials. Protecting water resources was emphasized in Huron County's recent Groundwater Study and was the focus of Justice O'Connor's report on the Walkerton Enquiry. "Keeping these materials out of area landfill sites protects groundwater, saves landfill capacity, and conserves resources through recycling," said Scott Tousaw, Money stolen from Blyth house On Oct, 12 at 9 a.m. OPP were called to a break-in at a house on Dinsley Street in Blyth part of North Huron. The officer learned that a house was left unlocked through the night while the occupants slept. That night, believed between 1 a.m. and 4:30 a.m., a person entered the house and stole more than $1,000 U.S. from a purse left near the door. Scott hosts Brussels MTV The Brussels United Church Women met at the home of Nelva Scott on Wednesday, Oct. 6 with nine members present. The meeting opened with the UCW Purpose. Mrs. Scott, who was in charge of the program, gave various readings about October and Thanksgiving. Each author used various scriptures to describe their thoughts. A variation of Psalm 103 was read and a Thanksgiving prayer closed this portion of the meeting. Joan Bernard read the minutes and Isabelle Wheeler gave the treasurer's report. Correspondence included statistical reports to be completed. Mrs. Bernard reported that the UCW would look after the second Lions supper most months with a list to be provided from the Lions. Pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and household batteries are sent to a secure landfill site. Residents are encouraged to store their household hazardous waste in a safe, dry location in the basement or . garage and not allow these materials to go into the garbage. Huron County is planning to offer collection depots for household hazardous waste again in 2005. Notices will be published in local papers. This program is for household use only. Commercial and industrial generators of waste must dispose of hazardous materials in accordance with Ministry of the Environment regulations.
