THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2004. Fall Home Improvement 2004 Home features waterfalls in and out Outside in In the far corner of Erlene and Jack Caldwell's living room lies a beautiful floor to ceiling custom made waterfall fountain. It was built by their son and his friend and is made of solid rock. (Elyse DeBruyn photo) The idea to have an indoor waterfall fountain came to Erlene after they added the rec-room onto their house. "There was just this dead corner. The other side has a fireplace and we wanted something nice in the other corner. I just love waterfalls and fountains, so it was a perfect solution," said Erlene. Before moving to Blyth, the couple had lived in Ottawa and in the front lobby of their apartment building was a "beautiful waterfall" which gave Erlene an idea of how she wanted her own fountain to look. In 1984 her son Kevin along with a friend, took one week to construct the floor-to-ceiling masterpiece. The waterfall is run by a pump which is constantly on, so the sound of running water is always in the background. Erlene said it acts as a humidifier during the winter and only takes two pails a day to keep it going. "It's nice to look outside in the winter and hear snow blowing and hear the water in here. It's really a nice sound," she said. But, when the summer finally arrives, the Caldwells can enjoy the beauty of mystic fountains outside as well since they have also installed another even larger fountain in their backyard. In 1988, Kevin was once again put to work and created another masterpiece. This time it took three weeks. "It's so nice to sit outside in the summer and enjoy the sound of running water. I just love the way it sounds," she said. Jack has some plans of his own for the outside fountain as he wants to set up his grandson, James's, large- scale garden train around the waterfall. The train set is installed in front of the house right now, but by next summer, Jack hopes to have it in the back. "It's so unique and would really he a sight to see a train running around a waterfall," said Jack. Although there are two very large waterfalls on the Caldwell property, Erlene would like to put another in the front yard, but unfortunately, vandalism is postponing them from continuing with their project. "The amount of vandalism in this town in crazy. It wouldn't work if we tried to put a fountain out front. Outside Erlene and Jack Caldwell's home appears like any other. Inside it's a different story. The back living room fills the air with the warming smell of incense, the calm, bubbling sound of water, green plants and dim lighting give a peaceful feeling that makes you feel at one with nature.
