Ironmen take on archrivals
By Lindsay Kulas
Wingham Advance Times
The Wingham Ironmen went up
against one of their arch-rivals, the
Bulldogs when they travelled to
Kincardine last Friday evening, Oct.
8 for a 4-3 win.
Ironmen coach, Louie Livingston
says that this game was among the
Ironmen's top games against these
tough competitors, with 49 shots on
net.
Ryan Fry started the scoring for
the evening, sending the puck past
the Bulldog goalie less than five
minutes into the first period. Earning
assists were Zack Graham and Matt
McCann.
The second period proved to be
fruitful as they stepped onto the ice
with a 1-0 lead and followed it up
with two power play goals. Justin
Russell scored the second gOal for
the Ironmen at 5:07, assisted by
Mike Weber and Devin McGuire,
while Jamie Chester sent in the third,
helped along by McGuire and Matt
McPhee.
Kincardine placed a goal past Kurt
Edwards in the Ironmen net, still
trailing 3-1 at the end of period two.
The boys spent some time in the
penalty box, racking up 10 minutes
off ice for each of the two periods.
The Bulldogs made a strong
attempt in the third, scoring two
goals just over a minute into the
period, leaving the score even at
three.
Cole Stewart made an effort and it
paid off with a goal only a couple of
minutes later. Earning an assist was
captain, Zack O'Krafka.
The final score was 4-3 in favour
of the Wingham team which now
stands at five wins, one loss and one
tie for the season.
The Ironmen took on the Alliston
Hornet, Oct. 9 on home ice in the
North Huron-Wescast Community
Complex, dominating the ice to a
frustrating 1-1 final score.
Enthusiasm rose as the Ironmen
shot a puck into the outside netting
of the goal in the first period. With a
no-score first period, both teams had
to pick up the shots-at-net, ending
the first with a total of 13. Nearing
the end of the period the Ironmen
kept the Hornets defense system on
high. The visitors barely missed a
half-open Ironmen net in the last
minutes of the period.
The beginning of the second
period had those in attendance
seeing a much more evenly played
game, as the Hornets moved the
puck away from their net more
regularly. The Ironmen continued
the push as good passing and power-
skating allowed Justin Russell to
sink a goal at an even 13:00 left in
the period, with help from Ryan Fry.
The Hornets worked hard to even
the score, doing so less than four
minutes later.
As the players intensified their
focus and those on the bench
became more vocal, the Ironmen put
pressure on the opposition, rarely
allowing the Hornets to move the
puck out of their end.
Shot after shot, the Ironmen failed
to place the puck in the goal and they
returned to the ice for the third
period, still tied at one.
A hard-played third period brought
no relief for either team as they dug
deep for five minutes of overtime
play.
An Ironmen victory seemed a sure
thing as the players acted on many
chances at the Hornet net, only to be
denied.
Jason Blinkhorn saved 33 shots for
the Ironmen, matching the shots they
took at Alliston.
The night ended in a tie, even
though according td coach Louie
Livingston, "we outchanced,
outplayed them, everything."
Livingston says that having a
strong goalie in Blinkhorn and
experienced defencemen will be the
advantages for the Ironmen this year.
"Tonight, we just had trouble
putting the puck in the net," explains
Livingston.
One of the difficulties this year, is
the addition of eight teams into the
league, including Alliston. "We
don't have a background on the new
teams," states Livingston, who will
be studying the strengths and
weaknesses of the newest
opponents.

North Huron councillor James
Campbell wants to see the smoking
bylaw enforced at Blyth arena.
At the Monday night meeting of
council, Campbell said that while,
there was a municipal bylaw in place
last year, there had been people
smoking in the dressing rooms.
Councillor Murray Nesbitt,
however, wondered how you could
enforce it when the dressing room
doors are locked.
Campbell said the staff at the
arena need to see that the ban is
