October is slipping away — sneaking off to the land of days gone by. The weather changes subtly and a new season is here. The things that fill our minutes and hours like the duties and jobs in our life gobble up the time and another day and month is but a memory. This either means I'm getting old of having a really good time — perhaps both. The harvest this past week was another of the blessings of our community. To watch the farmers and the machines going about their business was a joy. To live in this fertile and abundant part of the world is an opportunity to see the seeds make their way to our food. Work on the beds was completed last week. The invasive groundcover was torn out from the front of the school, and the bed replanted with shrubs. Landscaping has also been down with shrubs and/or perennials around the gazebo, the rock at the front of the property and the bell and flagpole. draws have started. It was fall convention time for the Legion. Elmira hosted this year. President Norm Dobson attended the presidents' meeting on Saturday. The quilt made by the Institute won second prize at Brussels Fair. Mrs. Bill VanEss won it. The second prize put up by the Institute was won by Lois McCutcheon and the third prize Watching the dust blow through the sunshine as the combines progressed across the fields was a holy moment — a chance glimpse at the circle of life. It was a moment that reminded me that life is a struggle and in the end well worth every anxious thought. The Halloween decorations are up and looking pretty fine. What a nice view of October, lots of gold and orange in various forms. Most Principal Heather Beattie credits the family of Melinda and Brian TenPas, including her mom Anna Hamilton, her brother Troy and his wife Shauna with much of the work. Sheila Cousins was also on site to lend a helping hand. "They were here all through the Thanksgiving long weekend. As well Melinda and her mom were here a Membership is always important in any organization. The criteria for joining the Royal Canadian Legion has expanded and having an affiliation to a veteran is not always necessary. Anyone wishing more information on joining the. Legion can call membership chairman John Harrison or drop into the Branch. We wish Comrade Dave Taylor the best in his medical problems. We are thinking of him and wife Shirley. The leaves are staying put a little longer this year, so call a friend and go for a nice drive in the next few days to enjoy the many colours of nature. Bye now, Betty G.W. couple of nights and afternoons." In addition to providing labour for the project Melinda TenPas also canvassed local businesses for donations. "The board agreed to match whatever she brought in which she thought was great," said Beattie. Mike Rau, with the Avon Maitland District School Board is also seeing that work will be done on and around the bell.' The completed work has gone a long way to promote the school, the principal feels. "The staff and students are working so hard in the school and in the class. We want people to drive by and see that this is a unique school, that we're taking pride in it." Beattie said she recently told some acquaintances to drive by and see what had been accomplished. "They thought it looked fantastic. That there was pride in what had been done. That's what it's,all about." The effort has been a positive experience for the students as well, said Beattie. "They watched when the TenPases were working and said how good it looks This is about the community working together." Of the TenPases and Hamiltons, Beattie can't say enough. "They took this job by the horns. They made coming to this school and seeing the property a reflection of what's happening inside. They kept the pride going and we need to say thanks to them for that."
