Man threatens police officer during arrest
A Huron OPP • officer was
threatened with physical violence
while conducting a routine traffic
stop.
On Oct. 7. the officer saw a grey .
2001 GMC Sierra take off at a high
speed from the traffic lights just
south of Wingham on Amberley
Road in Morris-Turnberry.
Using his radar, the officer
discovered that the vehicle was
travelling 80 km/h in a 50 km/h
zone.
When he stopped the truck, which
had four male adults inside, 'the
officer detected an alcohol and
marijuana odour coming from
inside.
A male •passenger was holding an
open bottle of beer and a baggie of
suspected marijuana. The officer
asked for the baggie, which was
handed over, but not before the man
removed a quantity of the substance
and put it into his coat pocket. After
being asked several times to turn it
over, the man continued to drink his
beer, refusing to give it to the officer.
The officer managed to get all four
males out of the vehicle, but the man
became abusive and "kept getting in
the officer's face," police stated.
Finally the officer was forced to put
the man under arrest.
The man then threatened physical
violence to the officer and at one
point resisted arrest and grabbed the
officer's gun belt, threatening to use
his weapon against him.
Fortunately, the officer was able to
break free and protect his weapon.
As other officers arrived to assist,
the man was taken into custody and
put in the back of a police cruiser. He
then tried unsuccessfully to kick a
window out.
A 47-year-old Pembrooke man
was charged with three counts of
uttering threats of physical violence
and death, assaulting an officer with
intent to resist arrest and attempting
to disarm a police officer.
He attended a bail hearing in
Goderich on Oct. 8 and has been
released from custody with several
conditions, and is to re-attend court
on Nov. 18.

Huron
council
briefs
At the Oct. 4 meeting of North
Huron council, authorization was
given for the connection of a class
system on the Blyth and District
Community Centre computer at a
cost of $2,000.
Clerk-administrator John Stewart
said the connection will link the
recreation facilities for bookings.
While the budget had set this item at
$500, that system would not do the
job, said Stewart.
"It would let anyone look at the
bookings, but doesn't let them use it
or book something," explained
Stewart.
