Beyond Bliss performed in Brussels on Friday night for a concert to promote first aid and CPR
in Huron County. Flyers are being distributed to hornes in the county urging people to get
training in the event. Organizers of Friday's show said it was a big success. Also taking part
were emcee Neil McGavin and guest speakers Brussels firefighter Doug Sholdice and Lisa
Lelon of St. John Ambulance. The event raised just over $400. (Vicky Bremner photo)

A Huron County councillor ques-
tioned the need to spend $70,000 to
give more county paramedics
Advanced Care Paramedic Program
(ACP) training.
John Bezaire of Central Huron
used a motion to defer a $70,000
training allocation until 2005 as an
opportunity to question the expense
of the whole program.
"Could we review this process
before we put it (the $70,000) into
the budget?" he asked. .
David Lew. manager of land
ambulance service for the county,
said the Ministry of Health recom-
mends 65 per cent of paramedics
have ACP training but Huron's goal
has been 50 per cent, so there's one
ACP-qualified paramedic in each
ambulance. The goal is 18 trained
paramedics. About nine currently
have ACP training.
The $70,000 would train an addi-
tional six paramedics, he explained.
Normally such training costs
$35,000 to $50,000 per trainee but
Huron is doing it for about $10,000
each, he said. "We're getting good
value for our money."
South Huron councillor Rob
Morley explained the training is

ACP training. I'm questioning
whether we can afford to have
ACPs."
But Dave Urlin of South Huron
suggested that in Huron County,
with its long distances to hospitals,
it's more important than ever to have
paramedics with advanced train-
ing.
Council will ask Lew and Todd
Martin, the new quality assurance
manager of the ambulance service,
to give a presentation on the ACP
program to the next committee of
the whole meeting.

Bezaire said that was exactly what
