From the Minister's Study
An adventure with God
By Pastor Brent Kipfer
Brussels Mennonite Fellowship
This summer my family and I
enjoyed camping at Bruce Peninsula
National Park. The highlight was a
hike to the grotto - a fascinating cave
on the shore of Georgian Bay.
Normally our children are not
keen for long walks — but there was
not one complaint over the five
kilometres of our trip. When we
reached the grotto. we crawled down
through a. narrow tunnel in the rock.
It soon widened out and took us
down to the water's edge.
Our boys were amazed by the
huge cave and the water pool and
entertained themselves by jumping
from rock to rock across the shallow
water.
This was new territory; exploring
it was an adventure.
Our life with God is also an
adventure. Jesus invites us to step
outside our familiar surroundings
and discover new dimensions of the
world he has made, new challenges
in loving people, new
understandings of his own character
and trustworthiness.
When we follow Jesus into his
kingdom, we are sometimes
disoriented by the surroundings.
Maybe we're a bit like some of the
visitors to the Bridger Wilderness
Area in Wyoming. Staff there collect
people's responses from registration
forms and comment cards that they
leave behind.
Here are 12 actual comments that
visitors have made:
I. Trails need to be wider so people
can walk holding hands.
2. Trails need to be reconstructed.
Please avoid building trails that go
uphill.
3. Too many bugs and leeches and
spiders and spiderwebs. Please
spray the wilderness to rid the areas
of these pests.
4. Please pave the trails so they can
be plowed of snow during the
winter.
5. Chairlifts need to be in some
places so that we can get to
wonderful views without having to
hike to them.
6. The coyotes made too much
noise last night and kept me awake.
Please eradicate these annoying
animals.
7. A small deer came into my camp
and stole my jar of pickles. Is there
a way I can get reimbursed?
8. Reflectors need to be placed on
trees every 50 feet so people can
hike at night with flashlights.
9. Escalators would help on steep
uphill sections.
10. A McDonald's would be nice at
the trai [head.
11. The places where trails do not
exist are not well marked.
12. Too many rocks in the
mountains.
You have to wonder if these folks
have missed the point! Mountains
are not usually groomed for our
convenience. Enjoying a wilderness
area requires a change in
perspective.
We need a similar change in
orientation if we are going to
appreciate the scenery Jesus shows
us. The values of his kingdom seem
upside down compared to the
prevailing values of our world.
Jesus says: "Blessed are the poor
in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of
heaven. Love your enemies and pray
for those who persecute you, so that
you may be children of your Father
in heaven. Do not worry about your
life, what you will eat or what you
will drink, or about your body, what
you will wear....But strive first for
the kingdom _ of God and His
righteousness. and all these things
will be given to you as well.
Jesus invites us to join Him on an
adventurous exploration of another
kingdom — a journey whose rewards
exceed anything we can imagine.
For those who follow, God makes a
promise: "Those who wait on the
Lord shall renew their strength, they
shall mount up with wings like
eagles, they shall run and not be
weary, they shall walk and not faint.
(Isaiah 40:31)
Join this adventure of God - and
enjoy the scenery along the way!
