From the Minister's Study
Much to be thankful for in Canada
By Rev. Dave Wood
Huron Chapel Evangelical
Missionary Church
What an exceptional month we
have just experienced! The weather
has been absolutely amazing and has
given many people opportunity to
get in that last minute painting etc.
Actually, we have very much in
this land of Canada to be thankful
for. Sure, there are lots of situations
and .circumstances that are not
always to our liking and life does
have a way of throwing some curve
balls now and then. But on the
whole. when we think globally, we
have a long list to celebrate over this
Thanksgiving.
The news is not the most pleasant
program on television these days but
what is seen and heard . . . we need
to practise being thankful! Imagine
living in Jamaica or Florida as
hurricanes uproot trees, relocate
houses and wreak havoc and
destruction without prejudice.
Sure it gets cooler and snow will
be here soon enough. And yes. taxes
are not the greatest and you always
seem to get those irritating
answering machines that have you
punch in every number on the
telephone. You've got aches and
pains and you have Fran for a
neighbour but despite these. minor
challenges to life, living in Huron
County is not so bad!
Paul the Apostle, in writing to the
Thessalonians, admonished them to
be thankful in every circumstance
because it is God's will for you in
Christ Jesus. Imagine receiving such
a letter when you are experiencing
deprivation and fear is your constant
companion. You have no idea what
tomorrow may bring and you do not
know if you will be the next person
who will give his life for his faith.
These people were under
persecution because of their faith.
They were considered enemies of
the state and treated less than sub-
human. Yet it is to these people that
Paul writes to give thanks in every
circumstance!
How could he ask this of them?
Circumstance does not dictate
"heart-stance" and for believers in
Jesus the heart .is a repository of
Divine love and. we can in every
circumstance give thanks to God for
what He has done for us in Jesus
Christ. He has given us new life and
hope and the circumstances of life
cannot compete with that which is
eternal.
We have much to be thankful for
and so before you complain -about
the weather, or grouch about the
"long" line at the checkout,
remember, we are a blessed people
and we have much to be thankful for.
This Thanksgiving, give but a
moment to the One who has given it
all and just say "thanks". I am
thankful for my wonderful family
and friends. I am thankful for the
town of Blyth and neighbours (even
Fran who I think just likes to see her
name- in print so I am obligated to
include her every time I write,
whereas Anne, I promised I wouldn't
mention her anymore because She is
shy and more reserved so I won't
and for all that God has blessed me
with and continues to bless me in
Christ!
Happy Thanksgiving!
