Huron Good Food Box honours its volunteers
The Huron Good Food Box is
hosting a volunteer appreciation
luncheon on Thursday, Oct. 7 in
Goderich. Each volunteer will be
presented with an appreciation
certificate during county council, in
the county courthouse.
Volunteers, along with the Huron
Field to Table Network, farm
suppliers, and county councillors are
invited to enjoy a lunch featuring
Huron County food products. Huron
Good Food Box is a success because
of over 60 volunteers, who
contribute their time and effort to the
project.

More and more, there is talk about
the importance of our diet for
maintenance of good health and
disease prevention.
Refined foods. chemical additives,
fast foods with high fat and salt
content, and fad diets are everyday
topics in our lives. Obesity, both
childhood and adult onset, are major
public health issues.
There is so much information
available with conflicting messages:
it becomes difficult to determine
what is proven and true.
One thing for sure, breastfeeding is
recognized as the healthiest way to
feed infants for the first year of life;.
breastfeeding starts them on a
healthy journey.

information.
The Huron Good Food Box
promotes healthy eating- by
emphasizing the importance of
adding fruits and vegetables to the
daily diet. This non-profit
organization buys local, fresh
produce first. During the past year, it

Months for the following reasons:
• Breast milk provides all the
nutrients necessary for normal
growth and development.
• Breast milk gives needed immune
system protection and reduced risk
,of allergies.
• Developmentally, the six month
old is ready to receive and swallow
solid foods. It allows baby's
digestive system time to mature to
digest these foods.
• There is less risk of contaminated
foods being fed to the baby. This
can be particularly important where
safe water is not always available.
• Worldwide, exclusive
breastfeeding can be used to assist
in spacing. pregnancies.
Health Canada plans to release
recommendations that support
waiting until six months to start solid
foods in your baby's diet.
In Huron County, 91 per cent of
babies leave hospital breastfeeding,
and over 50 per cent continue past six
months. The first few weeks can
present some challenges to moms,
forcing them to make the decision to
quit.
The Huron County Health Unit
offers various supports for these
moms including prenatal
breastfeeding classes, early home
visits, phone counseling, advice on
availability of breast pumps and
nursing supplies, and referrals to
various clinics and support groups.
Mothers need to receive accurate and
current information in order to help
them feed their babies to the best of
their abilities.

Bonnie Hastings from Brussels
has been a volunteer with the Huron
Good Food Box for over three years.
"I began to volunteer because I was
picking up a good Food Box
anyway, and I wanted to give the
Brussels community an opportunity
to receive a good • thing," said
Hastings. "1 find it's an incentive for
my family to eat healthier. When I'm
shopping, buying fruits and
vegetables are not one of the first
items on my list. This way, I have
them in my home. "I've already paid
for them and I need to use them."
