Huron Good Food Box honours its volunteers The Huron Good Food Box is hosting a volunteer appreciation luncheon on Thursday, Oct. 7 in Goderich. Each volunteer will be presented with an appreciation certificate during county council, in the county courthouse. Volunteers, along with the Huron Field to Table Network, farm suppliers, and county councillors are invited to enjoy a lunch featuring Huron County food products. Huron Good Food Box is a success because of over 60 volunteers, who contribute their time and effort to the project. The Huron Good Food Box is a distribution system that brings fruits More and more, there is talk about the importance of our diet for maintenance of good health and disease prevention. Refined foods. chemical additives, fast foods with high fat and salt content, and fad diets are everyday topics in our lives. Obesity, both childhood and adult onset, are major public health issues. There is so much information available with conflicting messages: it becomes difficult to determine what is proven and true. One thing for sure, breastfeeding is recognized as the healthiest way to feed infants for the first year of life;. breastfeeding starts them on a healthy journey. Canada celebrates Breastfeeding Week. the first week in October, to recognize the importance of breastfeeding. This year's theme is Exclusive' Breastfeeding: the Gold Standard Safe, Sound and Sustainable. and vegetables to ten drop-off sites throughout Huron County. Over 300 families take advantage of this alternative food buying method monthly. Included in the box each month is a newsletter that features a fruit or vegetable of the month, along with recipes and nutritional information. The Huron Good Food Box promotes healthy eating- by emphasizing the importance of adding fruits and vegetables to the daily diet. This non-profit organization buys local, fresh produce first. During the past year, it has purchased over $37,000 worth of fruits and vegetables from local farm Exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months provides all the nutrition that babies need to grow. Exclusive breastfeeding means exactly that — baby receives only breast milk from his or her mother. whether at the breast or from expressed milk in a bottle or cup. Breast milk provides the nutrients. easily-digested protein, growth factors, and immune factors to ward off respiratory and intestinal infections. Breast milk is human milk; it protects the immune system and reduces allergies in children. It is quality controlled by mother, who knows what she is putting into her system. Breastfeeding provides health' benefits for mother including weight reduction, reduced - risk of osteoporosis and certain cancers, as well as being cheaper than formula. Why wait for six months to start cereal and other solid foods? Studies around the world were reviewed and suppliers and local wholesalers. "Without the volunteers, this grassroots project would not exist. I am very fortunate to work with these dedicated individuals," said Helen Miller, Huron Field to Table co- ordinator. "The project has experienced success because there are so many talented people who offer their time and skills." Each year, volunteers contribute over $25,000 of in-kind support. Volunteers are involved in a variety of tasks, including loading and unloading produce, packaging bulk orders packing boxes, customer service at payment and distribution sites, and drivers, who deliver the the World Health Organization recommended waiting closer to six Months for the following reasons: • Breast milk provides all the nutrients necessary for normal growth and development. • Breast milk gives needed immune system protection and reduced risk ,of allergies. • Developmentally, the six month old is ready to receive and swallow solid foods. It allows baby's digestive system time to mature to digest these foods. • There is less risk of contaminated foods being fed to the baby. This can be particularly important where safe water is not always available. • Worldwide, exclusive breastfeeding can be used to assist in spacing. pregnancies. Health Canada plans to release recommendations that support waiting until six months to start solid foods in your baby's diet. In Huron County, 91 per cent of babies leave hospital breastfeeding, and over 50 per cent continue past six months. The first few weeks can present some challenges to moms, forcing them to make the decision to quit. The Huron County Health Unit offers various supports for these moms including prenatal breastfeeding classes, early home visits, phone counseling, advice on availability of breast pumps and nursing supplies, and referrals to various clinics and support groups. Mothers need to receive accurate and current information in order to help them feed their babies to the best of their abilities. Bonnie Hastings from Brussels has been a volunteer with the Huron Good Food Box for over three years. "I began to volunteer because I was picking up a good Food Box anyway, and I wanted to give the Brussels community an opportunity to receive a good • thing," said Hastings. "1 find it's an incentive for my family to eat healthier. When I'm shopping, buying fruits and vegetables are not one of the first items on my list. This way, I have them in my home. "I've already paid for them and I need to use them."
