Ironmen win 2 of 3 games
in weekend hockey action
By Jim Brown
Wingham Advance-Times
The Wingham Ironmen extended
their win streak to four games on
Saturday evening while Zack
O'Krafka extended his goal-scoring
streak to four games as well.
After scoring four unanswered
third-period goals last Friday
evening to score a 6-3 decision over
the host Hanover Barons, the
Ironmen needed another strong third
period effort at the North Huron-
Wescast Community Complex on
Saturday to claim a hard-fought 4-2
decision over the Goderich Sailors.
"That was a pretty ugly win,
tonight," coach Louie Livingston
said following the decision over the
Sailors.
He said the Ironmen have only
been playing one period of hockey
each game and are still managing to
win.
"We played the same way against
Hanover (on Friday) as we did
tonight," said the coach. "We didn't
play well."
According to Livingston, the
players have to learn to 'play 60
minutes of hockey; "we can't expect
to just play one period of hockey and
win every time."
He said the Ironmen took too
many penalties.
"They were frustrated because of
all the clutching and grabbing, We
had some goad chances to score, but
were just unable becauSe of the
clutching and grabbing," he said.
He noted the Ironmen got called
for some cheap penalties.
"We are struggling right now,"
stated Livingston.
In regards .to the four-game goal
scoring streak of O'Krafka.
Livingston said he was, 'leading by
example.' adding that was good to
see from the team captain and one of
the team's over-agers.
"We were tinkering with the lines
tonight (Saturday). We may do that
a bit to get the players motivated." he
stated.
Following a scoreless first period,
Goderich took a 1-0 lead on the
p )wer play as Bill Bradley scored at
15:59.
With 35 seconds remaining in the
period, Cole Stewart tied the game
on the power play, with O'Krafka
and Justin Russell earning assists.
O'Krafka gave the Ironmen the
lead at 2:54 of period three, on the
power, with Matt Hill and Blake
Alton earning assists. Less than two
minutes later, the Ironmen took a 3-
I lead as Russell scored, with help
from Luke Williams and Matt
MacPhee.
The Ironmen took a three-goal
lead at 6:32 when Williams -scored,
assisted by MacPhee and Joel
Hemingway.
With Tyler deVos sitting out a
cross-checking minor, Goderich got'
back to within two of Wingham as
Chad Gooyers scored with 5:06
remaining in regulation time.
Jason Blinkhorn made 17 saves in
the Wingham net and Jeff Baker
stopped 27 shots in the Goderich
goal.
Against the Barons in Hanover on
Friday, the Ironmen needed a four-
goal -outburst in the third period to
claim the 6-3 win.
0' Krafka tired a pair of goals for
the Ironmen. with Russell and Joel
Riley each getting a goal and an
assist. Single markers were added by
Cory Hamilton, and Matt McCann.
Hill picked up two assists, with
single helpers going to Stewart.
Jamie Chester and MacPhee.
Joel VanAlstine, Ian Schwartz and
Jon Kovacs replied for the Barons,
who did all their scoring in the
second period.
Kurt Edwards made 27 saves in
the Wingham net and Jeremy
Boniface stopped 20 Ironmen drives
in the Hanover goal.
The Ironmen had the four-game
win streak halted on Sunday
evening • when they travelled to
Bradford and were handed a 4-0
setback by the Bulls.
The Bulls scored single goals in
the first and second periods, and
netted a pair in the second period.
Jason Blinkhorn was in net for the
Ironmen and Travis Moore got the
start for the Bulls.
Getting the goals for the Bulls
were Brandon Smith, Adam
Martinez, Adam MacKenzie and
Bryan Gendron.
The Ironmen.hope to regain their
winning ways this weekend, when
they travel to Kincardine on Friday
for an 8:30 p.m. game against the
Bulldogs, then are at home on
Saturday- against the Alliston
Hornets. Following the game, the
fans are invited to a meet the players
night in the Columbus Centre at the
complex.
