Brussels Livestock report
Fed steers, heifers sell $3 lower at sale
Total receipts for Brussels
Livestock for the week ending Sept.
24 were 2,937 head of cattle, 626
lambs and goats. On Tuesday the fed
steers and heifers sold at prices $3
lower. Fancy and double-muscle
steers and heifers sold $83 to $88
with sales to $91.75. Choice steers
and heifers sold $77 to $82 and sec-
ond-cut steers and heifers sold $72
to $75. The good cows sold $2 high-
er with the balance selling on a
steady market.
'On Thursday the veal sold on a
strong active trade at prices $5 to
$10 higher. The lambs sold at priceS
steady with last week. On Friday all
weights and classes of stockers trad-
ed at prices steady to last week.
There were 837 steers on offer.
Amos B. Frey, Wallenstein, con-
signed two blonde steers averaging
1.480 lbs. which sold for $91.75. His
overall offering of sixteen steers
averaged 1,529 lbs. selling for an
average price of $77.80. Twelve
steers consigned by Owen B.
Martin, Wellesley, averaged 1,295
lbs. which sold for an average price
of $82.21 with his top limousin steer
weighing 1,425 lbs. selling for $88.
Clare Shantz. Chesley, consigned
seven limousin steers averaging
1.266 lbs. which sold for an average
price of $83.77 with his top steer
weighing 1,360 lbs. selling to
Norwich Packers for $84.75.
Ten steers consigned by Amon
Bauman, Wellesley, averaged 1.350
lbs. which sold for an average price
of $80.45 with his top red steer
Steven Haney, 16, son of Matt and
Elaine Haney, and Tyson Arts, 16,
son of John and Hilrita Arts, each
were awarded a two-year $3,000
scholarship to an Ontario university
or college of technology of their
choice at the ' recent Grey County
International Plowing Match and
Rural Expo held Sept. 22-26 near
Meaford. Both young men are from
RR4, Seaforth.
They competed for three days in a
class that did not allow coaching.
There were 14 plowpersons from
across the province in their division
- tractor With a two-furrow competi-
tion plow.
A total of I I young Huron plow-
persons have now earned this award
over the years. Along with Haney
and Arts, several other Huron and
local plowpersons competed this
past week. They were: Paul Dodds,
RR I , Seaforth; Paul Pentland,
Goderich; Steven O'Rourke,
Dublin; Ian Gordon, Bayfield; Bill
Feeney, Jr., Staffa; Shawn Flanagan,
Burlington; Brandon McGavin,
RR4, Walton and Jim Cartwright
antique class), Auburn.
O'Rourke, Feeney and Flanagan
placed well -in the 4-H competition
on Saturday.
Although the weather during the
match was exceptionally warm and
dry, all contestants met with
extremely challenging plowfield
conditions, from gravel to large
stones, together with a variety of
sandy-type soils; sod and stubble, all
in the same location.
McGavin, 12, son of Brian and
Shelley McGavin managed to pull
weighing 1,325 lbs. selling for
$87.75. Rueben Bruhacher,
Wallenstein, consigned two black
steers. averaging 1,335 lbs. which
sold for $86.75. His overall offering
of fifteen steers averaged 1,405 lbs.

$79.87. Don McAlpine, Ailsa Craig.
consigned one charolais steer weigh-
ing 1,275 lbs. which sold for $87.25.
His overall offering of sixty-six
steers averaged 1,492 lbs. selling for
an average price of $79.61. Fifteen
steers consigned by Paul B.
Bauman, Badjeros, averaged 1,328
lbs. selling for an average price of
$78.58 with his top gold steer
weighing 1,190 lbs. selling' for
$84.50. '
Aaron F. Martin. Newton. con-
signed one gold steer weighing
1.435 lbs. selling for $84.25. His
overall offering of eighteen steers.
averaged 1,362 lbs. selling for an
average price of $77.92. Fifty-four
steers consigned by Paul B. Martin,
Wallenstein, averaged 1,394 lbs.
selling for an average price of
$76.86 with his top red steer weigh-
ing 1,325 lbs. selling to Holly Park
Meat Packers for $84.25. Schmidt
Brook Farms, Woodstock, con-
signed one blonde, steer weighing
1.455 lbs. which sold for $86. Their
overall offering of ten steers aver-
aged 1,617 lbs. selling for an aver-
age price of $74.51.
There were 326 heifers on offer.
Johnston Farms, Bluevale, con-
signed one black heifer weighing
1,250 lbs. which sold to Dominion
off a first-place showing in the Jr
class on his final day of plowing.
Kora Bennett, 18, represented
Huron well in the Ontario Queen of
the Furrow competition. competing
against 25 contestants from numer-
ous other regions and municipalities.
She is the daughter of Bruce and
Meat Packers for $86. Their overall
offering of eighteen heifers averaged
1,407 lbs. selling for an average
price of $74.17. Five heifers con-
signed by David Bowles, Brussels,
averaged 1,279 lbs. selling for an
average price of $78.92 with his top
limousin heifer weighing 1.325 lbs.
selling for $85.25.
Tobias S. Bowman, Wallenstein,
consigned twelve heifers averaging
1,128 lbs. selling for an average
,. price of $79.18 with his top limousin
heifer Weighing 1,120 lbs. selling to
Dominion Meat Packers for $81.75.
Twenty-one heifers consigned by
Melvin W. Bearinger. Mt. Forest.
averaged 1,311 lbs. selling for an
average price of $77.59 with his top
blonde heifer weighing 1,280 lbs.
selling to Norwich Packers for $83.
Stanley Wright, Feversham, con-
signed one gold heifer weighing
1,250 lbs. which sold to Holly Park
Meat Packers for $83.50. His overall
offering of three heifers averaged
1,265 lbs. selling for an average
price of $77.30.
Eleven heifers consigned by
Clarence Dekens, Clinton, averaged
1,296 lbs. selling for an average
price of $76.23 with his top simmen-
tal heifer weighing 1,270 lbs. selling
for $82.25. Muxlea Farms,
Woodstock. consigned one blonde
heifer weighing 1.315 lbs. which
sold for $84.25. Their overall offer-
ing of ten heifers averaged 1,309 lbs.

Each representative was required
to plow, complete an interview,
deliver a speech and attend ban-
quets. etc. Bennett, coached by Paul
Dodds, did a job to be proud of in
the plowing competition.
Other local plow coaches for the
aged 1,199 lbs. selling for an aver-
age price of $72.53 with his to lim-
ousin heifer weighing 1,225 lbs.
selling to Norwich Packers for
$81.26. Woodham Farms,
Woodham, consigned- one limousin
heifer weighing 1,200 lbs. which
sold for $81.25. Their overall offer-
ing of three heifers averaged 1,300
lbs. selling for an average price of
$71.66.
There were 136 cows on offer. D I
and D2 cows sold $25 to $30 with
sales to $36; D3, $18 to $22; D4,
$10 to $15; shell cows, $5 to $10.
Harvey Hoggart, Londesborough,
consigned one charolais cow weigh-
ing 1,245 lbs. selling for $36. One
gold cow consigned by Paul H.
Martin, Wroxeter, weighed 1,400
lbs„ selling for $32.50. Aaron Fisher,
Ayton, consigned by one gold cow
weighing 1,505 lbs. which sold for
$32.50.
There were 13 bulls on offer sell-
ing $18 'to $35.50 with sales to $58.
Clarence Beitz, Mildmay, consigned
one limousin bull weighing 1,810
lbs. which sold to Dominion Meat
Packers for $35.50. One blonde bull
consigned by Keith Clyne,
Harriston, weighing 2,000 lbs. sell-
ing to Levinoff Meat Packers for
$30.
There were 124 head of veal on
offer. Beef sold $95 to $105 with
sales to $123.50; good holstein,
$110 to $120 with sales to $127.50;
medium holstein, $86 to $95; plain
and heavy, $65 to $80. Mark Pfeffer,
Clifford, consigned five holstein
junior plowmen were Bill Feeney,
Sr., Dublin; George Townsend, kR4,
Seaforth; Brian McGavin, and
Patrick Woods, Mitchell.
Two other area gentlemen who
were kept very busy during the
match were Graeme Craig, RR 1,
Walton, who is Huron's director to
the Ontario Plowmen's Association,
and Don Dodds, RR1, Seaforth, who
is an IPM judge.
