Celebrants were Anne Ryan and Viola Kirkby. They travelled to the Fireside Cafe to enjoy a lunch. Helping the girls celebrate were Marilyn McDonald, Marie Coutts, Mary Humphries and . Audrey Hackwell. Jean Bewley has returned from a trip to the west. She and daughter Mary Baker of Bolton flew to Calgary where youngest daughter Brenda Raven of Airdrie, Alberta picked them up. They headed north to Edmonton and spent a day or so visiting with Elizabeth Bewley Hutch (daughter of Art Bewley). They also went to the Columbia Ice Fields and were fortunate to have a beautiful sunny day. They were hiking at Athabasca Falls, Maligne Canyon and Swiffler Falls. They also squeezed in a visit with grandson John Raven and wife Jilly. as well as grandson Scott Raven and fiancé Heather. Jean reports a wonderful trip and being just a little tired. Congratulations to Casey and Melissa Boven on the birth of daughter Hanna Grace. Congratulations to 'Rob and Andrea Shortreed on the birth of a second son William (Liam) Robert. Big, brother Adam is excited and all are doing fine. We say farewell to Viola Traviss who has moved to an apartment in Seaforth. She will be closer to daughter Linda and we wish her well in her new surroundings. There was a lovely wedding' anniversary party held at St. Peter's Lutheran Chui-ch. Brodhagen for Boyd- and Gertrude Driscoll to celebrate 60 years of marriage. It was hosted by niece and nephew, Karen Rapien and Glenn DoImage. The crowd enjoyed scripture readings by the church's minister. Son Eric and wife were there to help their parents celebrate. A lovely lunch of cake and coffee was served. Neil and Marie McGavin have returned from spending the week at the International Plowing Match held in Meaford. They enjoyed renewing old friendships and meeting new friends. They report it was very dry and dusty and the soil was very sandy. They were also there to support the half dozen Huron County Plowman competitors. Their grandson Brandon, who is coached by his father Brian, put in three days of plowing. He plows with a two- furrow plow, in the 10-16 age class and has competed for two years. There were 10 competitors in the class and Brandon finished eighth .on day one, fourth on day two and first on day three. He did not place in the top two for the three-day scores but showed steady improvement everyday and is an up-and-coming competitor. The highlight at the banquet was the announcement that two young •men from Huron County were the winners of the Ontario Plowmen's Association scholarships to attend college or university. They were Tyson Arts and Steve Haney from the Dublin/Seaforth area. Both were competing at the match. (iraeme Craig, who is a director on the Plowing Match Committee spent the week in Meaford, with wile Helen and son Michael joining him on different days. Rosanna Grobbink, who is the Huron County Queen of the Furrow attended the Howick fair. She participated in the opening as well as presenting the Miss, Congeniality award. Celebrating a combined birthday celebration were Gerry and Anne Ryan. It was a surprise party arranged by their family for their 70th and 65th birthdays respectively. Paul and Cheryl and boys arranged to have Gerry and Anne at Paul's home, then managed to deliver them back to their own home to a houseful of close friends and immediate family. They enjoyed a lovely social afternoon on the veranda and on the new porch :;wing they received. An address_read by Cheryl Ryan encouraged them to take a day out and enjoy the beautiful day. It was a tremendous surprise and the many humorous birthday cards were enjoyed by all. Happy birthday to both Gerry and Anne. , What a wonderful couple of days for the Brussels fall fair. There was a great turnout on Tuesday evening for the Green Acres Mayor's Challenge and opening. The parade was wonderful and the many school children looked like they were having a great time. Congrats to the Brussels Agriculture Society for putting on a great fair. The Maitland Conservation; foundation held its tree planting ceremony at the George Taylor Conservation Area on Saturday. R7v. Cathrine Campbell attended from Melville Presbyterian Church. The reading of the names in memory of, and in celebration of, were read by Diane Hahn, director of Maitland Conservation Foundation. Piper Bessie Johnston provided music. A ceremonial tree planting was held. The Memorial/Celebration Grove is a project being undertaken by the . Maitland Conservation Foundation in partnership with the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority. The Foundation also workswith the famil of George Taylor whose generous donation of land allows this project to continue. Trees are planted from donations to the foundation for family or friends in- memory of someone or in celebration of such events as weddings. The George Taylor Conservation Area and Memorial Garden is NEWS FROM •CRANBROOK Eleanor Stevenson attended the Huron-Perth Presbyterial fall rally in St. Marys Presbyterian 'Church on Sept. 20. Some highlights were the flower arranging demonstration given by Janice Maclver in the morning and a ham and 'scalloped potato lunch served by the ladies of St. Marys. The afternoon speaker was Pauline Brown, a missionary of the Presbyterian Church, serving in the Bihl Fields of India. Communion will be held in Cranbrook Presbyterian Church on Sunday, Oct. 3. Congratulations to Lexi Smith for winning the junior cross-country run for Grey Central school last week, She is the daughter of Chris and Shelly Smith and will go on to Mitchell in competition. Very strange things could be seen on Murray Keffer's lawn this past week. Someone wanted the neighbourhood to know about a special birthday, but he could not be found when we went to give him our best wishes. Congratulations to the winners of the Majestic WI tickets drawn at the Brussels fair: Cindy Van Nes, first, a quilt; Lois McCutcheon, second, 'a tote bag and Leslie Knight, third, a gift certificate. located on Canada Company Rd. west of North Line. Happy birthday to all. Weekend visitors in Cranbrook were Donna and Steve Wells with Harvey and Marion Smith. Cliff and Mary Morrow were at Ross and Betty Knight's and attended some community activities with them.. Ross and Betty Knight have been getting ready for their large moving sale to start on Oct. 2. They have had fun going through boxes left behind when their children moved away from home. Congratulations to Murray and Marlene Fischer and Mr. and Mrs. Ross Stephenson winners from the area on Saturday night at the Legion elimination draw. Many people from the area attended the delicious fish fry and enjoyed seeing The Family Feud at the Legion that night. Leslie and Yvonne Knight attended the birthday party for Emma Badley on Sept. 26 at. the home of Angela and Jeff Badley. Birthday wishes go to Jeff Smith, Oct. 1; Davis Minielly, Oct. 2, and Naomi Knight, Oct. 6. Happy anniversary to Chris and Shelly Smith, Oct. 1 and Ross and Shirley Smith, Oct. 3. Sympathy is extended to the family of the late Blair McIntosh. He grew up and later farmed for some time in the Cranbrook area. Get-well wishes go out to Jean McIntosh and Ken MacDonald who are in hospital. Yummy!
