ends with auction
Big swing
On Sept. 19, the groups of men hit the fields during the
Brussels men's slowpitch tournament. In the final game

Plans are well underway and
wonderful gifts are arriving daily in
preparation for the Blyth Festival's

Committee co-chair Sara Trainor

been tremendously generous in
providing items for bidding on.
There are limited edition prints
including a number from Grand
Bend's River Road Artists Co-op,
getaways at local spas or bed and
breakfasts, dinner parties and
opportunities.
Committee member Joe Wooden
reported on one particularly
extravagant item that Aurora
Diamonds, Winnipeg and
Micheline's of Bayfield and
Stratford, have donated, a teardrop
Canadian diamond pendant set in
white gold and a pair of Canadian
diamond studs with a combined
value of well over $1,200.
At 6 p.m. the doors open with a

Douglas Beanie, producing artistic
director of Touchmark Theatre,
announced casting for Touchmark's
first offering for 2004/05 fall and
winter season — a staged reading of
the new play in progress, Feathers,
by Canadian Simon Joynes.
Feathers is being produced in
association with the Blyth, Festival
and will be directed by Beattie. It
will feature actor and artistic director
of the Blyth Festival Eric Coates
(reading the part of Jack), with
Melissa Good (Angie)..and veteran s
of Canadian stage and television.
(reading the parts of Edward and
Barbara), James B. Douglas and
Marcia Bennett.
Feathers is set somewhere near
Long Point on the Lake Erie shore
and draws its inspiration from the
vast bird-watching fraternity which
flocks to that area every year. It is

Tour
promises
variety
The planning for the Annual
Huron Hiker Tour has resulted in a
variety of displays and stops should
be of interest to people of all
ages.
Dorothy Cummings. convenor of
the tour committee said, "I am so
pleased with the 'response by some
of our leading agricultural
operations and I know that the
people will be as well."
"And, no, I am not going to tell
you ahead of time, it will spoil the
pleasant surprise."
The tour begins at the Brussels,
Morris and Grey arena in Brussels
and will have nine stops to enjoy.
After the tour there is an
opportunity to view exhibits, learn
about the birds and the bees and the
beans and other products, and enjoy
a delicious country supper with
homemade pie for dessert.
The tours run from noon to 5 p.m.
The country supper will be from 5 -
6:30 p.m. and will cost $10 per
person for adults, $5 per child and
pre-school children are free.
Donations to the local food bank
would be appreciated.

in quest of a rare sighting of a
Bachman Warbler. They are a newly
married, young couple, Jack and
Angie (played by Coates and Good)
and a middle-aged man and woman
(played by Douglas and Bennett)
who share a long, birding
acquaintance. The weekend turns out
to be life-changing for all four and a
treat for the audience too, full of
gentle humour and an intriguing air
of mystery.
Following the reading of Joyne's
project Dump Girl, Coates suggested
that Touchmark Theatre and Blyth
Festival combine forces on
Touchmark's next workshop event.
• He added that Blyth had interest in
another of Simon Joynes' plays,
Feathers, which he felt was ready
for its final workshop. Beattie read
Feathers and agreed it would be a
perfect candidate for Touccimark's
play reading series.
For a staged reading of a play in
progress the script is almost finished
and ready for production. The
presentation is well rehearsed and
lively, and the talk-back and
discussion following the reading
provide a fascinating window into
the inner workings of a play.
Touchmark Theatre is Guelph's
resident professional theatre
company. Tickets for the staged
reading of Feathers on Friday, Oct. 1
at 8 p.m. in The Co-operators Hall at
the River Run Centre are currently
