Old times
At the Thresher Reunion, held Sept. 10, 11, 12, Kerri
Coxon, left, drives the steam engine, which she purchased
at the age of 19 in 1999. The boiler was completely
replaced and all the other parts restored. Betty Hulley,
right, of Londesborough, whose family had owned the
engine for many years, had been told that the family was
bringing the engine to Blyth. This Thresher Reunion was
the first show to which the engine had travelled. (Photo

Baptism at United Church
The 43rd Thresher Reunion in
Blyth may be in the society's
history book but for one of
Londesbotough's .residents it was a
reunion of a different sort that
will be remembered for some
time.
Betty Hulley took a ride on a
restored Waterloo steam engine
which had belonged to her family
for many years.
It is believed that Billie Cole
bought the steam engine in
Waterloo and arranged to have it
brought to Londesborough by train.
Unfortunately when the engine
arrived Mr. Cole was not there to
unload it.
The train would be late at its next
stop that day so the minister in
Londesborough at the time, who
had his steam papers, had to be
summoned to unload the machine.
Billie Cole and his hired man, a Mr.
Johnston, worked the machine for
the next few years.
William Addison, Betty's
grandfather, who lived at Lot 8,
conc. 10 of Hullett Twp. was the
next owner. About three years later,
in 1917. Betty's father, George
Addison, purchased the engine
- from his father at the age of 17.
George threshed with the engine in
this area of Huron County until the
end of the season in 1941 with the
help of Bob Grumbally, Joe Storey,
George Hoggart, Harold Longman
and Lloyd Stewart.
Each farmer who employed.
George to thresh for him was told to
have on hand, when the engine
. arrived, a pile of wood to feed the
boiler. Water was brought to the
machine in a water tank on a wagon
drawn by a team of horses. A buzz
saw was attached to the back of the
engine for cutting wood as
well.
One of Betty's friends recalls
George heading home after dark
along the country roads with coal
oil lamps hanging on the engine for
light.
The farmers' wives fed the team
when the threshers arrived, Grace
Tebbutt was helping a farm wife,
Mrs. Stoddard, when George came
for meals. The couple were married
in 1930.
The steam engine sat behind the
shed on the Addison farm on Lot 8,
Conc. 9 of Hullett Twp. for many
years. Betty and her cousins
invented games around the en-gine.
Eventually, the unused steam
engine found a home in
Londesborough in a shed on
property owned by the Hulleys.
Kerri Coxon and her father
purchased the engine from Betty in
October of 1999 and the machine
has a new home in Milverton. By
this time the former steam giant was
nose down on the ground for the
front wheels had come off.
This year the machine, restored to
former glory, made an appearance
at the Reunion and Betty, along
with her children, who knew the
machine well, renewed their
attachment to it.

During her message Rev. Cook
noted that children are the future of
the church and faith. All members
must teach this faith and encourage
children's growth with God,
Assisting Rev. Pat were members
of the session - Marjorie Duizer who
presented certificates and Laura
Scott who presented each mother
with a candle signifying the new
light/child in God's world.
The senior choir offered an
appropriate anthem for the occasion,
Take My Life, Lead Me Lord. In the
responsive psalm, Psalm 138, David
praises God for all His care
recognizing that His mercy is
everlasting.
The story of Timothy, disciple of
Paul, is found in 11 Timothy 1:1-14
and was the text for the morning's
message, "Increasing Our Faith".
Timothy learned the stories of Jesus
from his mother, Eunice and
grandmother, Lois, who were early
Christians. His faith brought him to
the work of God with disciple, Paul.
When Paul suggested he stay
behind and preach on his own,
Timothy had doubts of his
capability. Paul assured him that
Timothy would find the power for
the work if he had faith in his God
given talents.
Likewise God gave each of His
children gifts of faith, power, love
and self-discipline and hopes each
will use these gifts to serve. Like
yeast, which grows in the proper
circumstances, faith will grow and
increase as we teach and share our
faith. Facing fear and the unknown
with faith in God's care increases
our own faith.
