North Huron supports resolution By Elyse DeBruyn Citizen staff North Huron council decided at its Sept. 7 meeting, to endorse the efforts of four other municipalities requesting the provinice reinstate the municipal outlet drainage program. The Twps. of Morris-Turnberry and Wainfleet each sent a letter to the Minister of Agriculture and Food regarding the program and sent a copy to North Huron council. The Morris-Turnberry letter stated It only takes a second for a fall to happen, but the effects can last a lifetime. Falls are the leading cause of serious injury and death for Canadian children under the age of six. "Between 1997 and 2001, 39 per cent of all injuries among children under the age of seven in Huron County were due 'to falls," said Kim Ross, public health promoter at the Huron County Health Unit. "Sadly, these are not accidents; most injuries are predictable and preventable. With proper supervision, small changes in daily routines, and the use of simple safety devices, parents and caregivers can protect their children from unnecessary harm and injury." The most serious falls occur in bedrooms and living rooms.' Here are some tips from Safe Kids Canada to help you keep your children safe in your home: • Move furniture away from windows and balcony rails. This helps stop children from climbing I enjoy travelling and going afar. There are many different ways to accomplish this using the same resources. Culture, economy, and environment all play roles in how these resources are handled differently. Many modes of transportation are the same throughout the world, but innovation has made a difference. Innovation not only depends on the state of the economy, but the work of knowing people. The need for speed seems to be a priority, but I feel that comfort should be the most important consideration in transportation design. I am not a fan of airplane travel. I don't mentally fear it, but the whole experience is quite physically Uncomfortable. Airplanes are not wheelchair accessible. When I board the plane, I must transfer into an aisle-seat, (a little chair with wheels on it.) My wheelchair will not fit through the door, so I am pushed in this "hunk of metal chair" and transferred to my airplane seat, which my body finds extremely uncomfortable. Once I'm in my seat, I'm there for the duration of -the flight. I cannot use the washroom facilities, so I try not to drink very much. The washroom is much too small and impossible for me to get to in the first place. I do not see why wheelchairs are such an inconvenience on airplanes. I tell myself to never fly again, but that its council was "appalled" by the July 28 news that advised the municipality of the termination of the provincial grants for the - Municipal Outlet Drainage program, which included drain maintenance and capital projects under a new engineer's report. "The province of Ontario has taken a step back in time, as this grant program has been in effect in Ontario for several decades," council said in the letter. Morris-Turnberry has well over out. • Put window guards on all windows on the second floor and above. These act like a gate in front of the window. Or, fasten windows so that they cannot open more than 10 cm. A window screen will not prevent your child from falling. • Install safety gates at the top and bottom of stairs. Use gates that need to- he anchored to the wall or banister. A pressure gate at the top of the stairs can fall over if a child leans on it. • Keep stairs and landings well-lit and free of toys or anything else that your child or you can trip over. • Keep one hand on your baby or toddler at all times during a diaper change. Keep diapers and clothing within easy reach of the change table. • Always use the safety strap in the high chair to keep your child from falling out. • Make sure the sides of the crib or playpen are up and secure. Keep large toys and stuffed animals out Beyond Limitations my fascination of seeing the world keeps bringing me back. I am not an expert on train travel, since my afternoon train ride I took in to Alaska- was my first time. However, I did enjoy it and I boarded the train easily. It is difficult for me to transfer in and out of my wheelchair, so being able to stay in my chair and riding a lift up to the cabin was a plus. I would like to travel by train again. I understand that VIA Rail allows a free ticket to the attendant of the wheelchair user with a doctor's note. This is something I will try, but I shall lower my expeqtations first. My cruise ship experience was wonderful, but I do realize that not all ships are wheelchair accessible. Doing research is a must to find out if the ship will suit your needs. While reading up on the Carnival Spirit, I noticed that the ship was constructed in Sweden. Sweden has many innovations for wheelchair design, and I hoped the cabin would be roomy. I was concerned about this, and I decided to contact the ship to have them send me photos of their washroom facilities. The ship obliged, and I was prepared: I got along just tine. Basic modes of transportation have been around for years. With time, designs will only get better. It will be amazing to see what the future shall bring. 200 municipal drains, which were constructed with the aid of provincial grants. The previous drainage grant program assisted farmers with the maintenance of the drains. Water that is not properly drained can cause flooding on municipal roads which can freeze causing accidents. Damage can be done to private property as well which in turn can cause an increase in liability for Ontario municipalities. of the crib or playpen. A child can use them to climb over the side. • Wipe up spills quickly, especially in the kitchen and bathroom. • Do not put your baby's car seat on a table or counter where it can be knocked over. • Use an activity centre without wheels. Recently, baby walkers with wheels have been banned in Canada due to the dangers they pose to children. • Remove loose rugs or tape them to the floor to keep your child and you from tripping. Installing safety products and removing potential hazards can help reduce unintentional injuries; however, these measures do not replace the need for adult supervision. Supervision is the most important thing you can do to protect your child. The first call was at 10:45 a.m. from Dutch Line in Central Huron. Someone had entered an unlocked barn, which was used as a shed, and stole a Stihl Mddel 33 chainsaw and an 85-piece Mastercraft ratchet set. The total theft is estimated at $850. If you can help solve this crime call the OPP or Crime Stoppers. Then at 1:45 p.m. an officer was called to a residence on Blyth Road in Central Huron. The resident told police that he had left two chainsaws out on his property near a bush he owned, Aug. 30 and went away for a few days. Sometime in _that week the orange/black Husqvarna Model 61 and a black/yellow 'Poullan Pro 455 chainsaws were stolen. If you have information call the OPP or Crime Stoppers. Over the last three fiscal years, Morris-Turnberry has received $14,783.71 in grants for drain maintenance and $89,812.18 for capital drain projects. In 2004 the municipality ' has six capital municipal drain projects with the estimated grant of $194,658 for the projects. "The council is greatly concerned on the impact in future years with the projects of this magnitude and the impact on the farming community with no provincial grant program in place.
