PAGE A-19. Thresher Reunion 2004 Sawmill refurbished each year for show Mighty giants The mighty steam engines lined up in the field are an impressive display at the Reunion. (File photo) Scene from the past The Reunion pays tribute to the old methods of industry and farming, such as the horse demonstrations and displays on Friday and Saturday. (File photo) Each year, members of the Threshers' Association gather to re- assemble and refurbish a piece of machinery that is really something for everyone to see. For more than 20 years, members gather a few days before the Reunion begins to put the sawmill back together and ensure it is in working order. For reasons of safety and conservation the mill is dismantled and put in storage following each show. . Spectators will catch a glimpse of what the mill was like 50 - 100 years ago as demonstrations show how the machine is run completely by steam engines, which come from across the province. The 54-inch blade can be powered by steam engines which range from 10 - 75 horsepower. The engine chosen for the job depends on the hardness of the logs to be sawn. With pine, a smaller engine will do, but for woods such as beech, the big machines take over. The whine of the huge blade changes as it bites into a log and the sawdust starts to fly. The logs are sawed to rough lumber and are then used for the construction of furniture. There is no waste with a steam powered sawmill because the scrap wood is then used to fire the engine. Other machines in the past, much like the Blyth sawmill, would have been available to come to the farm and turn trees from the bushlot into lumber for the home, however, the Blyth sawmill is too large to do much travelling. The sawmill will be set up near the steam engine display area in the central section of the park. Horse demos • revive the past Six years ago at the annual Thresher Reunion, a memory from the past was rejuvenated when horses once again became part of the show. The tradition continues on as the large animals do a demonstration the 43rd Reunion. For several years, the event was discontinued due to safety concerns with horses around large, noisy steam engines, but fortunately because of grounds expansion the event could be returned. The equine will be plowing, discing and cultivating during demonstrations Friday and Saturday at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. The demonstration is far from the engines and with a barrier between it and the campgrounds, it proves to be a safe site. This added attraction gives visitors the opportunity to witness historic equipment come back to life.
