Thresher Reunion 2004
Event offers variety in dining spots
Mmm!
Steam-roasted corn has people lining up during the
evenings of the Reunion. (File photo)
The mouth-watering aroma of
simmering beans over an open fire,
deep-fried fish, corn on the cob,
barbecued steak, fried onions and
pancakes with sausage are sure to
satisfy your hunger pains during the
Huron Pioneer Thresher Reunion
and Hobby Show from Sept. 10 - 12.
Gary Courtney and his helpers will
be steaming up the fairgrounds as
they prepare the famous corn roast
that draws a crowd each year.
Using the unique Thresher way,
Courtney steams the cobs following
a distinctive recipe not easily used at
home.
To get that perfectly roasted
flavour, you need exclusive cooking
utensils including a well-scrubbed,
50-gallon drum with a lid and a large
steam engine.
Attach one end of a steam line to a
valve on the engine and the other to
a drum. Then take 30 dozen ears of
corn, still in their husks, and pack
them into this unusual pot. Now turn
on the Steam, sit back and enjoy the
Thresher Show for about 20 - 30
minutes while the corn cooks.
Courtney and his assistants will be
occupied with this task every
evening for two hours from Friday
until Sunday.
Aside from• the tasty corn, other
food will be available around the
park at several locations. They are
strategically placed to make
satisfying your hunger and thirst
very easy.
The Huron County Museum
volunteers will be stirring the bean
pot as usual as well as serving some
sweet apple cider to wash down your
meal.
The beans are started early in the
morning and simmer over an open
fire throughout the day. As portions
are ladled out of the big cast iron pot.
more beans are added to the brew.
