SWEET MAITLAND
I love thee, Sweet Maitland l
My heart is aflame
The farther I've wandered,
More precious, thy namel
Thou'rt wed to dear Huron,
For ever and aye;
A dower of beauty,
Enriches thy wayl.
A song at the rapide,
All hail! from the bridge.
The maples in whippers,
Bend over the ridge!
io lovers live fonder,
In life's long career,
Chan Huron's green valleys
? And thy waters, clear!
`Afar are thy wavelets
Borne ont to the sea!
And so are the native-born
Scattered like thee!
But thou art a sweetheart,
Dear Maitland to all!
A sparkling tide welcomes,
As homeward we call!

Dr. E. C. Wilford is the onlyBrother
of Councillor A. H.
An interesting personality Is that of
Dr. E. 0. Wilford. who left Toronto
tecently for ooereeae with tate. C. A.
14. `C„ where be will engage as an
X-ray expert, A Canadian -born; he
hae the unique record of having,u!bullt
the first hospital atTzelitttefng,, Wept
Chine, where he went eight year's ago
ae a medical missionary for the Moth.
odist Church of Canada, Dr, Wilford
was born In Blyth, Out., and graduat.
ed at Toronto University in medicine,
and took pout•graduate work in Lon-
don, Eng., and Edinburgh preparatory
to taking up bis word in West Obina.
Tzeliuteing, in the Province of
Szechwan, West China, is the centre
of the salt industry for the 70,000.000
population of the Province of Szeeh-
wan and is approximately, 11.000 miles
front Toronto, and the Canadian
Methodist Hospital, which Dr. Wil-
ford built, is the largest one in West
(Mina. Tzeliuteing le a city of over
one million inhabitants and before the
advent of this young but enterprising
Canadian doctor had no hospital what-
ever, but those who were sick had to
Make a journey ofover a 100 miles 'to
the nearest one. With the keen fore:
sight of the earnest worker, Dr. Wil-
ford Boon saw the necessity of such an
institution, and in 101.1 the first actual
work was started,
Owing to the conditious caused by
the war, hoprever, the work was
stopped, and it was not until, Nevem,
ber 1915, that the work was recom-
menced, when much of the work had
been previously done had to be pulled
down andbuilt over again, But such
progress was made that a record was
set up in building in West China, and
after only some three mouths the ex-
terior was practically completed.
That the work of Dr. Wilford, which
practically marked a newera in the
treatmentof disease, not only in the
city but in the surrounding country
was a neceselty is evident by the fact
that during the last few years the
unrest and revolution in China, bas
brought many wounded to the neigh-
borhood of Tzeliuteing, and then began
another sign of the keen foresight of
this young man, for at the request of
the gentry Dr: Wilford begant Red
Cross work, and both government
and revolutionist eoldiere were cared
for.
Even in the. midst of the building
operations about three hundred cases
were treated, and the Chinese showed
their appreciation of the good work
done by the doctor by raising a
snbscri tion list,' ,which. amounted to
aboet $10,000 .(Chinese current*, equal
to about $5,000 in our money) and
when Dr. Wilford left laet, (manner
ner
for Canada he was assured that the
full amount would Le raised, 'andin
fact twenty-five per cent of the
aubscription list was then paid. This
splendidly equipped hospital will
destroy the power of the old Chinese
doctor, whose ignorance was parallel-
ed by the superstition of the people,
Of the many cases that this clever
young Canadian doctor has so success.
fully treated is given one example.
A few days ago a letter' was received
from a -Mr, Jo11IMe, a missionary in
Tzeliuteing, in which he enclosed the
following unique testimonial from Mr,
Wang Yii Wei, a member of ° the
gentry, which also. ,enclosed' `a
photograph of his eoa, Wang Yi1-Beh
Ding, whom Dr. Wilford had practi-
cally cured from what had before been
thought to be au incurable disease,
The letter says;
