4th bird tests positive for West Nile virus
A dead crow found in the Town of
Goderich has tested-positive for the
West Nile virus (WNv).
Positive birds have also been
found in Morris-Turnberry, Exeter,
and Clinton which establishes that
WNv exists in the bird population
within the county. While no other
birds will be submitted for testing
residents are still encouraged to
report sightings of dead crows and
blue jays to the Huron County
Health Unit.
To date the public have reported
188 dead bird sightings and of these
24 (15 crows and 9 blue jays) were
submitted for testing with three
crows and one blue jay testing
positive for the West Nile virus.
The health unit will continue to
conduct mosquito surveillance
throughout the County until the first
frost. "Although adult mosquito
trapping conducted by the health
unit has not found any positive
mosquitoes since surveillance
started in 2003, trapping has found
the types of mosquitoes known to be
capable of carrying the virus," says
Dr. Beth Henning, medical officer of
health.
To date in HuronCounty, there
have been no human or equine cases
of West Nile virus.
For more information, please call
the Huron County Health Unit at
482-3416 Ext. 2001 or if long
distance, dial 1-877-837-6143 Ext.
