• Art Exploration for kids at Sallows Gallery •
Art Exploration, a fun event for
kids age four to nine, incorporates
storytelling, movement,
imagination, and art. Programs run
every other Saturday at the Gallery
for eight sessions from 2 - 3 p.m.
"We had a great spring program",
says gallery director Robin Wark.
"Every other Saturday the gallery is
transformed into an art studio - we
roll away the display walls, get
down on the floor and get artistic.
The kids enjoy all sorts of different
art projects, storytelling and other
creative stuff."
The program last spring
culminated with the installation of a
miniTgallery in the Sallows Gallery
space that featured work from each
one of the up-and-coming artists
who participated.
Although it is open to all, families
interested in attending are
encouraged to contact the gallery at
524-9261 Or

Sheryl Evans, chair of the Reuben
R. Sallows Gallery committee, said,
"We are most excited about creating
some young ambassadors of
Sallows' legacy."
The Sallows Gallery website that
was recently launched at
www.sallowsgallery.ca includes a
wide assortment of activities that
interest kids, including games,
interactive projects and other
creative ways to discover the work
of Sallows.
The Gallery's free educational
programs encourage visitors to
explore the Sallows collection and
learn more about the life and times
of the historical period it covers.
Programming is designed to
enhance and expand upon current
exhibitions, while introducing
young visitors to the accompanying
website and searchable on-line
collection of photographic works by
Reuben R. Sallows.
In conjunction with each gallery
exhibition, school tours and
programs are offered for educators
throughout the year. With prior
arrangement, children may spend
some time at our art station where
they are encouraged to make their
own creations.
Interested school groups are
encouraged to contact the gallery at
524-9261 to arrange for a classroom
visit or to book a tour at the
Gallery.
The Gallery, which is located in
the Goderich Public Library, is open
from Tuesday to Saturday, noon to 5
p.m. or by special appointment.
The current exhibition The Time
of the Canada Company, runs until
Septa 16. On the Lake, an exhibition
of Sallows' work featuring new
enlargements from the permanent
gallery collection and the collection
of the Huron County Museum and
Historic Gaol, opens on Sept. 17 as
part of the Marine Heritage
Festival.

Sept. 9, the ninth day of the ninth
month of every year, is Fetal Alcohol
Spectrum Disorder (FASD)
Awareness Day. This day acts as a
reminder that during the nine months
of pregnancy, a woman should not
drink alcohol.
There is no safe time during-
pregnancy to drink alcohol. The baby
is growing throughout the pregnancy
and alcohol can cause damage at any
time. "It is estimated that one in every
100 births, or approximately 3,000
babies, are born with FASD each year
in Canada making FASD the leading
known cause of preventable brain
damage in Canada" says Irene
Brooks, public health nurse with the
Huron County Health Unit.
While Fetal Alcohol Syndrome
(FAS) is a more familiar term that
described a certain set of birth defects
caused by drinking alcohol during
pregnancy, people are now learning
more about Fetal Alcohol Spectrum
Disorder (FASD). FASD is the
umbrella term used to describe a
range of defects and disabilities that
can be caused by drinking alcohol
during pregnancy including:
-vision and hearing difficulties;
-bones, limbs and fingers that are
not properly formed;
-damage to heart, kidney, liver, and
other organs;
-slow growth; and,
-developmental delays.
Both FAS and FASD have serious
lifelong effects; an affected
individual will not outgrow the
symptoms.
No amount of alcohol is safe and
there is no safe-time to drink. When a
pregnant woman drinks alcohol, the
alcohol crosses the placenta to the
baby. The baby is so small and its
organs are not yet fully developed;
therefore. the
for
remains in the
baby's body for a long time before it
is broken down.
"Currently, research has not been
able to demonstrate a "safe" amount
of alcohol to drink during
pregnancy", says Brooks.
All alcohol — beer, wine, coolers,
or spirits have the same negative
effects during pregnancy; all
alcoholic drinks can affect the

growing baby.
Research also shows there is no
"safe" time to drink alcohol during
pregnancy. The brain and central
nervous system of the unborn child
continue to develop throughout the
pregnancy, and therefore, can be
damaged by exposure to alcohol at
any time.
It is important for partners, families
and friends of pregnant women to be
supportive and help pregnant women
avoid drinking alcohol. Here are
some tips to encourage an alcohol-
free pregnancy:
-Do not drink alcohol around
pregnant women.
-Have non-alcoholic drinks
available at parties.
-Get together in people's homes or
at coffee shops, rather than in bars.
-Do not ever suggest that "just one
little drink" will do no harm.
Pregnancy and childbirth can be a
wonderful and rewarding experience.
The choices you make during
pregnancy will affect your baby for
life. To be safe, women should never
drink when they are pregnant,
planning to get pregnant or if they
think there is a chance they might be
pregnant. If you have any questions
about FAS/FASD or alcohol-use
during pregnancy, please call the
Huron County Health Unit at 482-
3416 or 1-877-837-6143, or
Motherisk Helpline at 1-877-
