From the Minister's Study
7 days to spiritual fitness
Rev. Dr. Eugen Bannerman
Blyth United Church
Regular training is the key to
success in physical fitness. It is also
the key to success in spiritual fitness.
Set aside half an hour a day for a
week, then a month, then a year, for
each of these exercises, and you will
discover how much joy and meaning
they will bring to your life. If
possible, keep your spiritual fitness
training a private matter, "and your
Father, who sees what you do in
private, will reward you."
Here is a list of things you can do
for a week to get you into spiritual
shape. Eventually you may want to
substitute some of these exercises
for your own. Take this list with you.
Monday. Do some random acts of
kindness. Do something nice to a
stranger, tourist, visitor,
acquaintance, or a pet. There are
many kinds of needy persons.
Tuesday. Surprise someone. Visit a
Face off against your competitions
in a battle for bragging rights at the
Zehrs parking lot next month in
Fourth Power Play for Easter Seals
Kids hosted by Zehrs.
This you-have-to-see-it-to-
believe-it event gives new meaning
to street hockey. On Sept. 18 from
11 a.m. to 5 p.m. the Zehrs parking
lot will be transformed into a street
hockey stadium. Goderich's
business and industry hotshots will
be on hand to face off against their
rivals in this four-on-four, street
hockey tournament.
And the wackiest part - their
hockey uniforms are attire that best
represents their team.
This showdown in support of
children, youth, and young adults
living with physical disabilities will
feature Margot Page - the official
announcer for TSN Women's
Hockey, and alumni of the Women's
Team Canada Hockey Team.
Registration is open now to
organizations interested in entering a
team. For more information on how
you can participate in this fun team-
'building event call 1-888-278-77,97,
ext. 225.
Today over 20.000 children, youth
and young adults in Ontario live
with a physical disability and they're
striving for independence,
acceptance and achievement. For
over 80 years The Easter Seal
Society, Ontario has been assisting
these children and youth by helping
them to purchase costly equipment
needed for mobility and
communication, and by providing
access to critical information,
research and specialized camp and
recreation experiences - including
our 'Recreational Choices' funding
program. We are dedicated to
helping kids with physical
disabilities succeed.
neighbour. Phone someone. Send a
note or letter. Bake a pie. Chuckle.
Wednesday. Revisit a Bible story.
Rekindle your memories of stories
from the Bible.
Thursday. Experience the wonder
and beauty of nature.
Take a walk through a cathedral of
trees. Breathe fresh air. Feel free.
Listen to the sounds of nature.
Friday. Have some quiet time for
your self.
Here is St. Paul's list of things to
fill our minds as we meditate:
Whatever things are true, noble,
right, pure, lovely, and honourable.
Whatever things are good and
deserve praise, "think on these
things."
Saturday. Count your blessings;
write them down.
Create your own prayers. Keep a
journal. of the good things in your
life.
Read some of your favourite
hymns.
Sunday. Attend a service of
worship and thanksgiving.
A good church service should
leave you inspired, renewed, and
grateful.
Stay and chat after the service.
Monday. Repeat the cycle of
spiritual training.
