Huron County council has accept-
ed three recommendations from its
water protection steering committee
aimed at improving water quality in
the county.
The committee, made up of repre-
sentatives of municipalities, conser-
vation authorities, agricultural
groups and lakeshore residents'
associations, has recommended the
county work in collaboration with
the Ministry -of Agriculture and
Food, Ryerson University and the
University of Guelph to approach
the Federation of Canadian
Municipalities and the Community-
University Research Alliance for
funding for water protection initia-
tives in the county.
The project was proposed by
Stewart Sweeney of OMAF and
Ronald Puschak of Ryerson who

tion system to target areas of the
county that are more susceptible to
groundwater contamination because
of conditions such as soil type,
slope, land-use and proximity to sur-
face and groundwater.
After identifying such areas, the
program would approach landown-
ers to suggest remedial actions to
improve water quality such as
changing cropping practices, plant-
ing trees, changing manure applica-
tion practices or upgrading septic
systems.
On the topic of septic systems, the
county will approach the Federation
of Canadian Municipalities for fund-
ing for a loan progran-i for septic
tank improvements arid replace-
ment. The county, behind warden
Bill Dowson, has been a major pro-
moter of a loan program, similar to
farm tile drain loans, which would
assist people to fix faulty septic sys-
tems with a loan they can afford.
Council also voted to investigate
joining the Clean Water Project as a
replacement for the Healthy Futures
Program.
Currently Middlesex, Oxford and
Perth Counties and the cities of
London and Stratford are financing
this program for source water pro-
tection and water quality improve-
ments. The Ausable Bayfield

the program. Huron County has set
aside $100,000 for water protection
efforts this year and this money
could help fund the Clean Water
Project with county landowners
becoming eligible for funding.
The committee also received for
information a request from the
Bluewater Shoreline Residents'
Association for financial assistance
for DNA testing of waters along the
shoreline to determine the source of
E. coli pollution. The matter will be
considered at the committee's
September meeting.
Meanwhile other groups are ask-
ing to be included in the committee,
said Scott Tousaw, director of plan-
ning and development, but it's diffi-
Cult to know how large the commit-
tee should be. Groups are being
urged to attend committee meetings
which generally involve everyone in
the room in discussions, he said.
Though these representatives would
not have a vote, the practice of the
committee has been to work on con-
sensus, Tousaw said.
