Huron County Library offers new service As part of Huron County Library's commitment to continue to improve library service, new electronic products are now available — from home and from any library location. The new databases have been added to the library's website, in advance of those increased demands for information that come during "back to school" days. If you suddenly find yourself working on a project late at night, needing a reference from a major Canadian newspaper, or researching a current news article, the Huron County Library can still provide you with the answers you need. The electronic products are made available through links to huge databases that users can access via the internet at any of the 13 branches of the Huron County Library or on- line from home, office or school using a valid HCL membership card. Current database listings provide information such as full-text articles from respected medical journals on a variety of health-related issues, articles from Canadian magazines, newspapers and newswires, access to more than 1,000 English language journals and magazines, biographical information on over one million people from throughout history, literary criticism and book reviews, children's encyclopedias and much, much more. "We are delighted to provide this new online service to all residents of Huron County," said John Bezaire, chair of the county's social and cultural services committee. "It's a huge expansion of services, accessible through links on the library's website." The web address is: www.huroncounty.ca/library. Click on Information Online to access these resources. Beth Ross, county librarian adds, "We know how important access to quality information is to school success and improved opportunities in life in general. Huron County Library is constantly enhancing its collections at all 13 branches with the purchase of books, new children's materials, books on compact discs, and DVDs that are completely new to the library. With the databases and new materials being added, we are truly at the forefront of providing access to quality information in Huron County." For more information about these new services you can call or visit your nearest branch of the Huron County Library. Health unit's Health Link new and improved For the last 10 years, the Huron County Health Unit has offered Intake, a walk-in and telephone advice service for the residents of Huron County. This service was offered Monday to Fridayfrom 1:15 until 4:15 p.m. In an effort to make this service more accessible to everyone, the health unit announced that their Intake service, now called Health Link, will have new hours of operation. Effective Sept. 7, Health Link will be open Mondays and Friday, from noon to 4 p.m., and Wednesdays from noon to 7 p.m. Health Link's new hours of operation will make it easier for people to come to the health unit during lunch hour or after work. Smoking bylaw kits still available On Sept. 4 all Huron County public places and workplaces must be 100 per cent smoke-free. Bylaw information kits are now available for business owners and managers. The kits explain all bylaw requirements and will help ease the transition. Even if your business or public place is already smoke-free, be sure to pick up an education kit to ensure you are acting in accordance with all bylaw regulations. The kits are available at any municipal office or at the Huron County Health Unit office in Clinton. The education kits contain the following information: - a summary of the bylaw - questions and answers about compliance and enforcement - suggestions for creating a smoke- free environment - information on environmental tobacco smoke - no smoking signs, which are required under the bylaw to be posted at any entrances and in the washrooms - quit smoking resources. Any establishment or work site that has not received a kit, or needs additional signage can pick them up at any municipal office or the Huron County Health Unit office in Clinton. A copy of the kit can also be downloaded by going online to www.huroncounty.ca/healthunit . For further information, please call the Environmental Tobacco Smoke Bylaw Information Line at (519) 482-3377. "Huron County families are busy and we recognize that to meet our community's needs, evening hours are crucial", said Penny Nelligan, director for Huron County Health Unit. Health Link offers a variety of services including sexual health, immunizations, and family support services like parenting and infant nutrition. The health unit is also changing how residents access Health Link services. Routine immunizations, such as diphtheria, tetanus, measles, mumps, and rubella will be given on Monday afternoons. "It is critical for Health Link's success that all routine immunizations be booked, in advance, for Monday afternoons", says Dr. Beth Henning, Medical Officer of Health. "Booking appointments in advance will ensure that Health Unit staff members are prepared for your family's specific immunization needs." Tuberculin skin tests will be administered on Mondays, Wednesdays or Fridays and then can be read on the following Health Link day. Booking an appointment is important for Wednesday evenings and Friday afternoons. "By booking your appointments, Health Unit staff will be able to prepare for your visit by pulling and reviewing your record, prior to your arrival", said Henning. These changes will help to ensure that Health Link meets the needs of the community, by offering comprehensive and efficient client- centred care. To book an appointment, contact the Huron County Health Unit at 482-3416 ext. 2260, or 1-877-837- 6143 . ext. 2260 if calling long distance. If calling outside Health Unit hours of operation, press 5 to speak with the Public Health Nurse.
