A fond farewell to summer 2004
By Father John Johnson
St. Michael's Roman Catholic
Church, Blyth
As summer 2004 fades into history
many find themselves with pangs of
sadness. Time passes and we so
often wish it wouldn't.
It seems foolish to cling to
something we cannot stop, yet we
do. It is difficult to let go of many
things, but nothing so difficult as
time, because once it is gone it is
Greeting at Melville Presbyterian
Church last Sunday morning were
Cathy and Matthew Cardiff. With
Rev. Cathrine Campbell leading the
service of worship and Crystal
McLellan as organist, the Call to
Worship was followed by the hymn,
For the Beauty of the Earth.
Rev. Campbell led the responsive
reading of Psalm 81: 8 - 16, after
which the hymn, A Mighty Fortress
is Our God, was sung.
The scripture lessons of Jeremiah
2: 4 - 13; Hebrews 13: 1 - 16 and
Luke 14: 1 - 14 were read by Rev.
Campbell with the assistance of
Dave McCutcheon, followed by the
singing of the hymn, 0 God of
Bethel By Whose Hand.
In her sermon, God Forsaken,
Rev. Campbell began by describing
a place called the Luther Marsh
which, when our country was
originally surveyed, was thought to
be the most desolate and God-
forsaken place possible, with no
hope of growth or future promise.
Rev. Campbell compared it to the
situation found in the scripture
lesson where Jeremiah describes
God's despairing over a relationship
with His people who had turned
away toward false gods.
"The Bible tells us how to live in
God's world," said Rev. Campbell,
"not focused on ourselves but to
help others and thus honour God
and find contentment in a good life".
She mentioned the celebrations in
this congregation which included
Leona and Jim Armstrong's golden
anniversary and Ethel and Joe
Brewer's diamond wedding
anniversary, as examples of how
people celebrate the good things of
life that God has given them.
"It's important that you come to
the feast with behaviour that neither
puffs up or brings down'," said Rev.
Campbell. "When God calls you to
do something, go joyfully, willingly,
quietly, not setting up barriers of
exclusivity against others so that
they may also come."
Collection was taken up by Brian
gone forever. Today will soon be
yesterday and will never return.
So how do we cherish, rather than
dread, the passing of time. There is
only one way and that, of course, is
with our Lord Jesus. We often forget
him during the week and many also
ignore him on weekends. Is it any
wonder people cling to time? They
have nothing else.
Having Our Lord with us always
awards us hope. With him each day,
Armstrong and Dave. McCutcheon.
The final hymn, 0' Worship the
King, was sung, and then everyone
was invited to attend the fingerfood
luncheon in the church parlour
following the service.
The flowers at the front of the
church were placed there by the
Gibson family, in loving memory of
sister Lillian Mitchell.

Our Lord He responds so beautifully
by reminding us that our time is
short on earth, but do not worry for
in Him, with Him and through Him;
we have strength to endure on earth

such as this we no longer worry
about time, we rather look forward
to being with Him in heaven forever.
Time becomes, not a loss, but rather
a joy in God's presence and a
passage forward towards an end of
beauty.
We look forward to tomorrow
because it is closer to our eternal
home. God is with us, not as some
untouchable force but as a person
who wants to be intimate with his
children.
He tells us, "I am with you always,
until the end of the age."
Our hope rests, not in clinging to
time but, rather, in our Lord Jesus
who promises eternity where time no
longer matters.
Summer 2004 we bid you farewell
and autumn 2004 we welcome you
with joy.
