(Elyse DeBruyn photo) The Amazing Great "Cheap" Race #3 organizers would like to thank the following for all their amazing assistance: Scrimgeour's Food Market, Chris Courtney and the gang at the bush, Dave Smith of Cranbrook Golf, Jane Gardner and Karen Stewart, the Ontario Maze Hoffer family, Mitchell Fire Chief Bill Elliott, Kim and Paul Orrick, Ernie Phillips, and especially all our race helpers. The real winners of the race, tied for first, were team Just Do It: Ray Salverda, Randy Nixon, Linda Middegaal and Lorie Brooks and The Tailgate Fluezies: Paul Kerr, Phil Black, Pam MacDonald and Deb Mellor. (They cheated the least). Through buskering and donations received, over $600.00 was raised for the BIM Firemen's Emergency Services Training Centre. Thanks to all racers, a good time was had by all. See you next year for a whole "new ball of yarn". THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 2004. Sports Rugby team wins silver The Brussels Midget girls competed in their year-end tournament which was held in St. Pauls. The Midgets finished their season tied for seventh place. They would first meet the third-place team from Hibbert. Catrina Josling was on the mound for Brussels in the first inning. Seven runs would cross on five errors and two walks. Josling wold allow only two runs in the second and another in the third. Brussels scored two runs in the second and two in the fourth. Candice Ross came in to pitch for Brussels in the fourth. Six runs crossed on four hits and one strikeout. Brussels' loss sent them to the B division. Brussels would have to beat St. Pauls to advance to the finals. At bat in the first Katie Aitcheson and Jenna Fischer waited out walks. Singles by Lacey McCall and Josling scored three. Sarah McDonald was on the mound for Brussels. St. Pauls tied up the game on two runs one hit, three walks and a strikeout. Again Aitcheson and Fischer got on with walks. McCall, McDonald and Josling hit singles to move Brussels ahead. The Brussels defence shut down St. Pauls on a grounder and two strikeouts. Brussels added another run at the top of the fourth. Mary Aitcheson waited out a walk and Candice McLellan's triple scored the runner. St. Pauls regained the lead in the bottom half. Three runs scored on four hits and one walk. The U-19 Southwestern Ontario regional girls rugby team competed in the Ontario Summer games recently. The team represents all of Southwestern Ontario and draws players from Brussels, Walkerton, Wingham, Kincardine, Exeter, Hensall, London and Seaforth. The opening game of the tournament matched the girls against Eastern Ontario. Each team started out with strong defence until Caitlin Martin (Belmore) busted a huge run for the game's first try, giving South West a 5-0 lead. Soon after, Katie Weber (Walkerton) dodged the opponents from Ottawa and added another. Shaw Bellefeuille finished off the scoring for South West as she scampered down the sideline. The final score of 15-0 for the South West girls put them a leg up in the round robin event. Game two pitted the girls against the Niagara Rugby Union. Key injuries in the first match that ended the tournament for Laura Reinhart demanded adjustments which the girls successfully made. Jill McCallum (London) delivered the hit of the tournament, which neutralized play from Niagara and gave the South West girls an edge. Martin and Weber scored early, but Niagara countered with a penalty kick narrowing the lead to 10-3 for South West. Brianne Crawford (Stratford) scored the important insurance try and Martin finished off a tremendous day as she flew around the outside and scored her second of the game. Ross and M. Aitcheson. Fullarton would regain the lead scoring seven runs on seven hits and two walks. - The next two innings the score wold stay the same. Then Brussels added two more runs to their total on doubles by K. Aitcheson, McCall and a single by Fischer. The score was Fullarton 13, Brussels 9. The Midget Girls would receive a medallion as the B runners-up. Call 1-866-734-9422 or visit wwwmedicalert.ca. Medic Alert Lets You Live Life. At the end of regulation the South West girls were victorious 20-3 and mdre importantly 2-0 in group play. The girls awoke for day two of the competition brimming with confidence. The next opponent was the Toronto Rugby Union and this game would determine who would finish first in the round robin. Both teams played tight defensive matches, with pounding rucks and punishing mauls. Crawford managed a strong cut back and pierced the Toronto defence to give the girls the lead. Shannon Johnston (Lucknow) converted the kick to extend the South West lead to 7-0. Toronto clawed back into the match and tied the score, but the referee's whistle for the end of regulation gave South West a tie and the first place they wanted. As they stood on top after the first three games, the South West girls were also starting to lose many key players. Morgan Craig (Kincardine) and Vicki Koebel (Walkerton) both suffered tournament ending injuries. However, the South West girls were determined, and responded as they faced a rematch with the Niagara Rugby Union. The game was another tough battle in the trenches, but Martin used her lightning speed to penetrate the Niagara defensive line and score the game's opening try. Both teams exchanged bone crunching nicks and mauls and everyone on the sideline was nervous until Ashley _Kraemer (Mildmay) exploded and dragged three bodieswith her across the try line. TIte game ended with a 10-0 victory for the South West and a berth in the gold medal game on Sunday. The final game of the tournament -fittingly Matched the first-place South West against the second-place Toronto. Toronto stole a pass out of mid-air and jumped out to an early 7- 0 lead. However, the South West girls answered with a strong forward game and Weber eluded the defenders to score a try and Johnston tied the game at 7-7 with a successful convert. It was then that the South West girls seemingly hit the wall and could not match the nicks of Toronto. Some well-placed chip kicks gained many yards and allowed the Toronto team to take the lead back. When all was said and done, the game ended with the first defeat of the tournament for South West Ontario by a score of 22-7. The girls were disappointed to have lost, but they did capture the provincial silver medal. The coaches were extremely proud of the effort- and are looking forward to having many of the girls back in two years for the next Summer Games. Team members include: Rachel Elliott of Brussels, Laura Reinhart, Colleen Craig, Kelsey Telford, Nikki Schmidt, Ashley Kraemer, Jill McCallum, Morgan Craig, Shannon Johnston, Ashley Bruxer, Denise Ritchie, Jenna Van Osch, Caitlin Martin, Brianne Crawford, Shawtelle Bellefeuille, Amber Caldwell, Taylor Graham, Katelyn Durrer, Rachael Cook, Allison --Dugas, Katie Weber, Ashley Marion, Vicky Koebel, Julie Prout, Stacey Martin. The coaching staff is comprised of Bill King, Bob Illman and Ryan Clancy. Brussels' bats exploded in the fifth with singles by McCall, Josling, Amy Bishop, Ross, M. Aitcheson and McLellan to score seven runs. St. Pauls answered with only two runs. The Brussels offense never gave up. Singles by Fischer, McCall, McDonald, Josling and Ross scored another five runs. St. Pauls was unable to catch up. The final score was Brussels 19, St. Pauls 10. Brussels was now in the B finals against Fullarton. Josling started on the mound allowing six runs-on five walks, two strikeouts and two errors. Brussels' bats would score seven runs in the second inning with hits by Fischer, McCall, Ashley Keffer, Midgets B runners-up
