Neither rain nor shine could stop the plays at the women's
slowpitch tournament in Brussels last weekend. A member
of the Chicksters from Brussels swung a bit early on the
pitch from the other Brussels team, the BS Hitters. (Elyse

Rugby team wins silver
The Brussels Midget girls
competed in their year-end
tournament which was held in St.
Pauls. The Midgets finished their
season tied for seventh place. They
would first meet the third-place
team from Hibbert.
Catrina Josling was on the mound
for Brussels in the first inning.
Seven runs would cross on five
errors and two walks. Josling wold
allow only two runs in the second
and another in the third.
Brussels scored two runs in the
second and two in the fourth.
Candice Ross came in to pitch for
Brussels in the fourth. Six runs
crossed on four hits and one
strikeout.
Brussels' loss sent them to the B
division. Brussels would have to
beat St. Pauls to advance to the
finals.
At bat in the first Katie Aitcheson
and Jenna Fischer waited out walks.
Singles by Lacey McCall and
Josling scored three.
Sarah McDonald was on the
mound for Brussels.
St. Pauls tied up the game on two
runs one hit, three walks and a
strikeout. Again Aitcheson and
Fischer got on with walks. McCall,
McDonald and Josling hit singles to
move Brussels ahead.
The Brussels defence shut down
St. Pauls on a grounder and two
strikeouts.
Brussels added another run at the
top of the fourth. Mary Aitcheson
waited out a walk and Candice
McLellan's triple scored the runner.
St. Pauls regained the lead in the
bottom half. Three runs scored on
four hits and one walk.
The U-19 Southwestern Ontario
regional girls rugby team competed
in the Ontario Summer games
recently. The team represents all of
Southwestern Ontario and draws
players from Brussels, Walkerton,
Wingham, Kincardine, Exeter,
Hensall, London and Seaforth.
The opening game of the
tournament matched the girls against
Eastern Ontario. Each team started
out with strong defence until Caitlin
Martin (Belmore) busted a huge run
for the game's first try, giving South
West a 5-0 lead. Soon after, Katie
Weber (Walkerton) dodged the
opponents from Ottawa and added
another. Shaw Bellefeuille finished
off the scoring for South West as she
scampered down the sideline. The
final score of 15-0 for the South
West girls put them a leg up in the
round robin event.
Game two pitted the girls against
the Niagara Rugby Union. Key
injuries in the first match that ended
the tournament for Laura Reinhart
demanded adjustments which the
girls successfully made. Jill
McCallum (London) delivered the
hit of the tournament, which
neutralized play from Niagara and
gave the South West girls an edge.
Martin and Weber scored early, but
Niagara countered with a penalty
kick narrowing the lead to 10-3 for
South West. Brianne Crawford
(Stratford) scored the important
insurance try and Martin finished off
a tremendous day as she flew around
the outside and scored her second of
the game.
Ross and M. Aitcheson.
Fullarton would regain the lead
scoring seven runs on seven hits and
two walks. -
The next two innings the score
wold stay the same. Then Brussels
added two more runs to their total on
doubles by K. Aitcheson, McCall
and a single by Fischer. The score
was Fullarton 13, Brussels 9.
The Midget Girls would receive a
medallion as the B runners-up.

At the end of regulation the South
West girls were victorious 20-3 and
mdre importantly 2-0 in group play.
The girls awoke for day two of the
competition brimming with
confidence. The next opponent was
the Toronto Rugby Union and this
game would determine who would
finish first in the round robin. Both
teams played tight defensive
matches, with pounding rucks and
punishing mauls.
Crawford managed a strong cut
back and pierced the Toronto
defence to give the girls the lead.
Shannon Johnston (Lucknow)
converted the kick to extend the
South West lead to 7-0.
Toronto clawed back into the
match and tied the score, but the
referee's whistle for the end of
regulation gave South West a tie and
the first place they wanted.
As they stood on top after the first
three games, the South West girls
were also starting to lose many key
players. Morgan Craig (Kincardine)
and Vicki Koebel (Walkerton) both
suffered tournament ending injuries.
However, the South West girls were
determined, and responded as they
faced a rematch with the Niagara
Rugby Union.
The game was another tough battle
in the trenches, but Martin used her
lightning speed to penetrate the
Niagara defensive line and score the
game's opening try. Both teams
exchanged bone crunching nicks and
mauls and everyone on the sideline
was nervous until Ashley _Kraemer
(Mildmay) exploded and dragged
three bodieswith her across the try
line.
TIte game ended with a 10-0
victory for the South West and a
berth in the gold medal game on
Sunday.
The final game of the tournament
-fittingly Matched the first-place
South West against the second-place
Toronto. Toronto stole a pass out of
mid-air and jumped out to an early 7-
0 lead.
However, the South West girls
answered with a strong forward
game and Weber eluded the
defenders to score a try and Johnston
tied the game at 7-7 with a
successful convert. It was then that
the South West girls seemingly hit
the wall and could not match the
nicks of Toronto.
Some well-placed chip kicks
gained many yards and allowed the
Toronto team to take the lead back.
When all was said and done, the
game ended with the first defeat of
the tournament for South West
Ontario by a score of 22-7.
The girls were disappointed to
have lost, but they did capture the
provincial silver medal. The coaches
were extremely proud of the effort-
and are looking forward to having
many of the girls back in two years
for the next Summer Games.
