Exhibit tells Irish immigrant's story
Inspiration
Poet, Lynn Harrigan spent a day in Goderich's Huron
Historic Gaol, looking for inspiration in its dark walls and
damp cells as she put the finishing touches on Moon Sea
Crossing, a collection of documentary poetry. Her poems tell
the story of Aina, an Irish immigrant who tried to eke out a
better life with her husband and four children in Stanley Twp.
The poetry is the basis for Bread and Water: One Woman's
Journey Within These Walls, a collaborative installation at
the gaol from Aug. 28 to Oct. 24 that is complemented by
art, photography and music. (Shannon Kroephn photo)
The story of Aina, an Irish
immigrant who tried to eke out a
better life with her husband and four
children in Stanley Twp., will unfold
in a show of poetry, art, photography
and music staged at the Huron
Historic Gaol this fall.
Bread and Water: One Woman's
Journey Within These Walls is a
collaborative installation at
Goderich's Huron Historic Gaol from
Aug. 28 to Oct. 24.
The show is based on Moon Sea
Crossing, documentary poetry written
by Clinton poet Lynn Harrigan,
which tells the story of the
determined pioneer who suffered a
breakdown after at least four
miscarriages and a fall in a river
while washing clothes. Despite
numerous chores that required
completing by winter and a cabin of
children who would be without their
mother in November 1847, Aina's
husband admitted her to the county's
asylum before being transferred to

the lunacy asylum in Toronto. She
was released in the spring of 1848.
The poems in Moon Sea Cross,
which will be published in 2005 by
Black Moss Press, explore a variety
of themes, including mental illness,
displacement, hunger, grief and Irish
folklore. The poems are based on
research in public records, although
the name of the main character and
some details were changed.
"1 think she was definitely a strong
woman. I think she had a strong will
to be successful as a pioneer and to
make a life that was better than in
Ireland," said Harrigan, after she
spent a day in the octagonal gaol,
looking for inspiration in its dark
walls and damp cells. "She just
became exhausted."
After Aina's release, she and her
husband went on to be successful,
and eventually settled near Lake
Huron.
The show at the Huron Historic
Gaol, a national historic site that is
opened to the public during the
summer months, will feature
Harrigan's poetry, along with
paintings and sculpture by Goderich
artist Linda Wiebe, ambient
soundscapes by electronic sound
artists dreamSTATE, and black and
white photography by Shannon
Kroeplin that were inspired by the
poetry.
The gaol will be rearranged during
the show, with related artifacts from
the Huron County Museum
transferred to the site.
The show will be punctuated by
evening readings by Harrigan and
live music accompaniment.
Wiebe says each of her pieces,
which combine such materials as
beeswax and tar on canvas painted in
bold colours, respond to certain
aspects of the poetry. She even
explores the vast canvas provided by
the gaol's stunning architecture.
"They are responses to emotions;
little flashes of memory. The explore
mental state, family and dreams," she
said.
The Huron Historic Gaol, located
at 181 Victoria St. N., is open for
