Mert and Doreen Hackwell were
busy last week with grandchildren
Mackenzie, five and Aiden, four,
who were enjoying holidays at their
home. It's a change in pace having
little ones around for a week.
Home for a visit was Mark
McNichol from the west. He
attended the McClory Hugill
wedding and checked out a Walton.
Brewers game. He made the rounds
of seeing family and friends before
returning home again.
Belated congratulations go out to
Larry and Myrtle Badley on the
occasion of their 40th wedding
anniversary.
Congratulations also to Abe and
Frances Vanderveen on celebrating
their 50th wedding anniversary.
Attending a dinner at Fireside Cafe
were family Sylvia of Auburn,
George of Lucknow, Andy,
Jeannette of Blyth and Robert at
home, along with their families and
some friends for approximately 40
attendees. Son Frank was home in
the spring and was unable to be
home at this time. Congratulations
to the Vanderveens.
Neil McGavin was the guest
speaker at the Middlesex County
Cattlemen's Association barbecue
held at Popular Hill last week.
Home visiting Margery Frazer
was daughter Carolyn Sullivan last
week.
A correction, daughter Dianne's
last name is Blake not Black as
printed last week.
Come out and support the 77th
annual Huron County plowing
match this Friday, being held at
Varna on the farm of Bill and Joyce
Dowson and family. There is tractor
On Monday, Aug. 16, 40 people
from District 25 (Huron, Perth and
Middlesex) boarded a bus and
headed for Brock University, St.
Catharines, the site of the Ontario
Senior Games, Actifest 2004.
Having qualified at the local level
last May, Joan Perrie participated in
the prediction swim for ages 55-64
years. The challenge is to swim 200
metres, eight lengths and to predict
as closely as possible the length of
time it will take.
The first day her prediction was
6.01 seconds off the actual time,
placing her in sixth place. The
second day's prediction was just 95
seconds off and, as the score was
Members and friends of Duff's
United Church were greeted by
Judy Emmrich. The small crowd
enjoyed the special musical talent of
Brian Black as he sang Green
Pastures.
The half-dozen children present
gathered at the front of the church to
tell Rev. John Tuchlinsky what they
had done on their summer holidays.
Rev. Joan asked what they could do
or couldn't do and then asked
what their parents could do or
couldn't.
She explained that no matter how
plowing, horse plowing, walking
plow, timed -plowing and of course

1:30 p.m. there are 11 contestants
with four Walton-area girls
competing. Speeches are at 2:30
p.m. so come out and support these
young ladies.
Congratulations to Mandy
Mitchell the Brussels Fall Fair
representative at the CNE in Toronto
this past weekend. She had a lot of
fun and had quite a busy schedule
from check-in time on Friday until
Sunday night.
With interviews, dress
inspections, classes in how to walk,
where to walk, etc., bus rides to and
from the CNE grounds to the dorms
at Ryerson College where they
stayed, they were a busy group.
There are buck and does for two
local young couples this weekend,
Veronica Grobbink and Bud
Sinclair, and Matt Lee and fiancé
Cheryl Thompson.
A unique and fun activity was held
at the farm of John Holthuysen.
Teams of two competed in the riding
lawn mower soccer competition.
The team of Jim Cook and Steve
Gulutzen report having lots 'of fun
and a good time but were not the
ultimate winners of the day.
A Jack and Jill shower was held at
Auburn community centre for Matt
Lee and Cheryl Thompson for
invited friends and family. It was a
time-assigned shower that guests
were given a time of day on their
invitation and their gifts would be
something used at that time of day
or night.
Progressive euchre followed for
the afternoon with prizes being won
by Colleen McCallum for the ladies
and Matt Lee for the men.
Congratulations to Ron and Joan
Lee who celebrated their 57th
wedding anniversary at daughter
Christine's home in Stratford.
Cassandra Banks has returned
home following a week's vacation
with dad Randy Banks. They
travelled to MacGregor, Manitoba
where Cassandra lived as a small
cumulative, she jumped up to third
place, Winning a bronze medal.
District 29 also won a bronze
medal in carpet bowling.
The ultimate goal of the Ontario
Senior Games has always been one
of fellowship and sportsmanship.
This was evident from the deck of
the swimming pool to the golf links
to the horseshoe pitch.
Swimming and card games were
held right at Brock University and
other events, bowling, bocce,
walking, tennis, darts, golf were held
at various clubs around St.
Catharines. It was a major feat to
house, feed, entertain and run events
for 1,400 participants but the
young or old people are, they all
have a different and special gift to
share with one another.
The offering was collected by
Brian McGavin and Jim Campbell.
Rev. Joan's reflection started with
a story about a young boy in search
of God, and how he found him in the
beautiful smile of an older woman in
the park.
Anyone can be called to serve
God, whether young or old. People
may feel inadequate to do God's
work, but he is always there to guide
them. Everyone has gifts to share.
girl. They toured the area and did
some visiting with old friends.
We welcome Mandy Workman to
the village as she is busy getting
ready to move into the former
Lacroix house.
Chris and Judy Lee attended the
Glanville wedding in St. Thomas on
the weekend. An instance of what a
small world it is, they were seated at
a table with people with didn't
know. During the evening's
conversation, iwurns out Chris, who
after immigrating to Canada to the
Orwell/St. Thomas area, was seated
beside the older brother of his best
girlfriend from public school.
When mentioning he now lived at
Walton, the gentleman asked if
Chris knew anything about the
motocross track, with the obvious
answer of being yes. Turns out, the
gentleman's son has raced against
Chris in the plus-40 category and
has been at Walton racing.
It made for quite an evening of
unexpected memories and
reminiscing.
An update on the sheds on the
lines. John van Vliet's looks pretty
well done, Steve Baan's shed has its
roof and most of its sides, and Neil
Mitchell's has been picked up and
moved to its new location on the
other side of the tree line. Jeff
Grobbink took down a shed and he
has a beautiful field of sunflowers
that I admire everyday as I go by.
Another broken foot to add to the
growing list is Nicole Stevenson's. It
happened a couple of weeks ago and
she is healing just fine which is good
news.
Ron Stevenson has been off to
Newfoundland to a POA meeting for
Pfizer representatives. What a great
place to go for a meeting and a
chance to see the country.
Returning from the east coast
were Don and Pat Nolan. Having to
leave their bikes in Halifax when
Don had problems with his knee,
they were now able to travel back
there to ride the bikes home. I'm
sure they are both glad to be able to
go out riding again after a month of
organizers did a wonderful job.
One major highlight of the event
was the presence of Walter,Qretzky,
the official spokesperson for the
games. All know him as a famous
hockey dad and this past week the
seniors met him as an outgoing,
energetic senior — a ray of sunshine
at all events he attended — and he
didn't miss a thing. He signed
hundreds of autographs and posed
for pictures and wrote
congratulations on Joan's name tag.
The message seems to be — get up,
get out and keep active! It's fun and
it's healthy!
no bikes.
There were 10 area men off to
Bowling Green, Ohio for the tractor
and truck pulling competition. From
the Walton area were Don Dalton,
Ron McCallum, Bill McClure, Brian
Alcock, and Dave McKay. Brussels-
area men included Don Fischer,
Mark Swartz, Bruce Fischer and
Ken Verbeek.
They had a rainy day Friday and
enjoyed just visiting under Don
Dalton's tent. Saturday and Sunday
was great pulling by all standards,
then they were homeward bound on
'Sunday evening.
Enjoying a birthday gift of a
weekend in Bayfield at the home of
Jim and Dona Knight was Leona
McDonald. She had a visit with
daughter Karin and enjoyed a
birthday dinner out with Jim and
Dona.
The Walton. Brewers played three
games this past week.
They played against the Zurich
Rangers to start the week and
suffered a 5-4 loss in extra innings.
It was a good game and a tough loss.
Facing the 'Wroxeter Rippers in
Walton, the Brewers played a strong
game winning 10-0. Steve
Leonhardt pitched the five-inning
shutout and Mike Miller added to
the runs by hitting an in-park
homerun.
The Brewers faced the Goderich
Gators on Sunday afternoon and
picked up another win, defeating
them 2-0. Scott Leonhardt pitched a
FROM WALTON
strong game. The Brewers scored
their two runs in the first inning and
played tight the rest of the game.
The Brewersyecord is 14 wins and
five losses.
Their next game is Friday night in
Brussels against the Tigers at 8:30
p.m.
The Walton Indians slowpitch
team hosted the Winthrop league
year-end tournament, held at the
Lions Park in Seaforth. There were
seven teams involved including
many Winthrop and Walton boys.
Capturing the A title were the
Dublin Dukes. The Winthrop Rats
were the B winners.
