Little-known facts about the Woodstock festival
In August of 1969, more than
500,000 people traveled the country
to Yasgur's Farm in Bethel, New
York, to attend the Woodstock
Music and Arts Festival. The concert
was billed as a weekend in the coun-
try and "Three Days of Peace and
Music."
The event drew people from all
socioeconomic classes and has gone
down in history as a groundbreaking
and influential musical event.
While many people are familiar
with the general concept of
Woodstock, they may be surprised
to uncover some of the little-known
trivia surrounding the event. Here is
a list of some interesting facts, just
in time for the 35th anniversary of
the concert. •
* The concept of Woodstock was a
collaboration between four individ-
uals: John Roberts, 'heir to a drug-
store and toothpaste manufacturing
fortune; Joel Rosenman, an ortho-
dontist: Artie Kornfield, vice presi-
dent of Capitol Records; and
Michael Lang, a concert producer

council meeting, a zoning bylaw
amendment of Charlie and Georgina
•Johnston's property, was deferred
until the Aug. 17 council meeting as
further information needs to be
obtained.
The Johnstons approached council
regarding a change to the zoning of
their property on Lot 28 in the south
part of Conc. 1, to permit a home
occupation for an office and
shed.
The required extra space
needed, measures 40 inches by 60
inches.
The,2004 summer theatre season
at Huron Country Playhouse ends
this month with the Broadway musi-
cal, Man of La Mancha.
At the end of the 16th century, in a
bleak dungeon, the imprisoned play-
wright Miguel de Cervantes is
awaiting trial by the dreaded
Spanish Inquisition. But first he
must face a court of fellow prisoners
anxious to relieve him of his few
possessions — including a precious
unfinished manuscript.
In order to save himself,
Cervantes stages the saga of Don
Quixote, casting himself as the
deluded knight errant, and embarks
on a magical adventure to defend the
noble principles of honour and truth.
The production is directed and
choreographed by Ted Forlow, who
has 15 Broadway shows to his cred-
it, including Man of La Mancha and
A Funny Thing Happened On The
.Way To The Forum.
The 21-member cast is led by
David Ludwig in the dual role of
Cervantes and Don Quixote.
Ludwig has a list of credits, includ-
ing national tours of Titanic — The
Musical and Phantom of the Opera.

Roberts and Rosenman wanted to
become involved in a business ven-
ture, while Kornfield and Lang were
working on an idea for a new
recording studio and concert to pro-
mote it. All four ultimately came
together by chance to create the fes-
tival under the name Woodstock
Ventures.
* The Woodstock name was used
in honour of the New York town that
was home to many notable musi-
cians of the time and a cultural cen-
terpiece of the area. By the late
1960s, musicians like Bob Dylan,
Tim Hardin. Van Morrison, Jimi
Hendrix and Janis Joplin were mov-
ing to the area and wanted a state-of-
the-art studio to record in, which
helped fuel the idea of focusing the
festival towards that end.
* The concert didn't take place in
the town of Woodstock, but rather
on Max Yasgur's farm in Bethel,
New York. The original site was in
Walkill, New York, but the town

Susanna Reid from the Huron
County Planning Department, pre-
sented council with the county plan-
ning report, but requested a deferral
of a decision until further informa-
tion could be obtained.
The Johnstons had no comment,
but citizens were given the opportu-
nity to express. thei r concerns.
Lloyd Allen addressed council and
expressed his concerns on the mat-
ter.

protested the concert (and the hip-
pies who. would attend) and would-
n't issue the permit for land use.
* Yasgur was a shrewd busi-
nessperson, having attended New
York University and. studying real
estate law. He was the-biggest milk
producer in Sullivan County. The
600 acres that Woodstock Ventures
sought were only part of the Yasgur
property, which extended along both
sides of Route I 7B in Bethel.
* Musicians were hesitant to sign
up for the festival and work with the
unknown organizers. However, the
promoters offered them contract
paycheques that were higher than
what they were receiving for other
concert appearances. The Jefferson
Airplane, who signed for $12,000, •
normally signed for $5,000 to
$6,000. Creedence Clearwater
Revival signed for $11,500. The
Who then came in for $12,500. The
rest of the acts fell in line. In all,
Woodstock Ventures spent $180,000
on talent.
* Bob Dylan, who lived about 70
He said the amendment will turn
the property into a "traffic island"
and employees will use the driveway
as an entrance.
Another concern he had was about
the size and use of the shed and
office.
He said Johnston had looked into
using his own driveway, but council
said during the last meeting,' that
they had no problem with him using
an unopened road allowance.
Regarding Allen's concerns, Reid
said the' matter should be deferred
for the evening and see if they "can
come to a compromise."
miles from where- the concert took

backup group, The Band, did.
* Bethel had a population of 3,900
at the time.
The concert that was to promote
peace garnered protests and hate-
mongering from residents of Bethel
and surrounding towns. The citizens
were nervous about the thousands of
people who would be swarming the
area.
* While advance tickets were sold
for $6, $7 and $8 dollars for the
three-day event, ticket booths never
arrived at the Woodstock site, there-
fore, no money was ever collected at
the gate.
* Route 17B was the only road to
the festival. Traffic stretched nine
miles along the highway. Many con-
certgoers were left floundering.
* Residents in the area heard that
there was not enough food available
to feed everyone at the festival.
