WI members attend Tweedsmuir workshop A group of 65 ladies attended the annual Tweedsmuir workshop for London Area Women's Institutes, held at the Mount Elgin Community Hall Aug. 10. There are fourteen museums in Oxford and they were all invited to put a display up for the day. Eight different ones responded and each curator described their display and a brief description and history of their museum. Everyone sat around tables. Each table represented something, such as bird, insects, transportation. As each person registered with the Springford WI they were given a slip of paper with names that would fit the tables. This worked well to mix up the groups. This fall, Gallery Stratford is showcasing 2, an exhibition of artwork by Stratford based Doug Peterman and Elmira-based Heather Wood. Peterman is a skilled furniture maker who explores self- expression through his craft. Wood is a glass artist whose 20-year career is presently being surveyed at the Canadian Clay and Glass Gallery in Waterloo. Paired, their work draws together gothic arches, tree branches, colour, glass and wood. On the show's origins, Peterman reminisces: "The real seed for this show came from a car trip that Heather and I took to an Ontario Crafts Council event in Haliburton a few years ago. We hadn't met before the trip, but five hours of driving each way gave us lots of time to get to know each other." From this informal car-bound Each table was given questions to answer about Tweedsmuir histories and how they are handled in different branches. This led to very interesting discussions which were reported back to the whole group. The answers were given to the Oxford curators. It was hoped everyone would get some new ideas and questions answered, which seemed to happen. Helen Whaling was in attendance with lots of supplies for Tweedsmuir history books that branches are working on. One of the questions was what is the difference between the history book and the scrapbooks and what would go into each. Some branches keep scrapbooks and meeting, Wood recognized a connection between her work and Peterman's: "a common thread of reverence for trees and a recognition of humanity's place as an integral part of nature runs through our work." Peterman's work investigates the boundary between what is natural and what is artificial. His overt manipulation of wood is always done with a mindful respect of the material's natural features. Wood's body of work includes photographic and organic images sandblasted onto glass surfaces. She uses the fragile medium of glass, which alludes to human skin, to address the precarious relationship between humans and their natural environment Running concurrently with 2 is the annual Lawson Killer Perth Huron others don't. After lunch there was a slide presentation by the Springford Branch which won second place in an FWIC Tweedsmuir competition in 1982. The topic was Birth and Development of a Small Community. The mystery object was a hat or fedora stretcher. Another activity was a line-up of bottles filled with different kinds of grain to see how many could be identified. This created a lot of interest. Ruth Axford reported on some of the activities by FWIO including great interest in the quilt shows, has been some gain in memberships, four new posters have been created and will be available. There are still Juried Exhibition, which gives local and regional artists - amateur and professional alike - the opportunity to submit artworks to be juried and then displayed to the viewing public. This year, Peterman and Wood will jury the submitted artworks. Always presenting a range of work, this exhibition sponsored by Lawson Killer Insurance, has supported and encouraged the rich artistic life of the Perth Huron region for over twenty years. Mary Gladwin, archivist of Oxford County spoke on the preservation of photographs. She stressed the importance of the Tweedsmuir histories which have been compiled by Women's Institutes. They are a valuable resource. It is important to keep pictures and documents in an acid-free environment. Also it's a good idea to take at least one roll of black and white film, which keeps better for a long period of time. Coloured pictures start to fade in a few years. Use good quality film and good quality processing. Albums should be stored in an upright position. It is a good idea to have the original Tweedsmuir Histories stored in the local archives and copies kept in libraries for research. Some groups are now putting their history on CD disks.
