Going, going, gone
Bright sunshine and a cooling breeze made for a great day

U-9s play Listowel
The U-15 division championship
playoffs of the North Perth Soccer
League were held at the Howick
Community Centre this past
Saturday. The Brussels team was the
definite favourite going into the
playoffs as they were unbeaten in the
regular season.
The locals were able to continue
their unbeaten streak throughout the
day and in the end came away with
the championship in what could only
be described as an extremely
exciting final game.
The final journey to the
championship started early Saturday
morning with a game against a
strong Wallace team which finished
the regular season second to
Brussels. The game ended in a 1-0
win for the Brussels squad.
The locals then went on to a
convincing 4-0 win against Drayton
II. These two wins combined with an
earlier playoff win against Newton
last Monday guaranteed Brussels a
spot in the finals.
The final championship game put
the Brussels team up against a very
strong Drayton I team and it was not
long into the game before Drayton
had proved that they had come to
play.
"I think We were quite nervous
going into the championship,"
commented Brussels coach Mark
Beaven. "Drayton had a couple of
superb players, who caught us off
guard, and before you knew it, we
were two goals down."
The first half was controlled by the
Drayton attack but Brussels was able
to regroup and striker Greg Tiffin
had put the locals within one goal by
halftime. Tiffin's goal came from a
beautiful header off a throw in by
Adam Corbett.
The second half proved to be a
different story though as Chelsea
McLellan showed why she was
chosen as the most sportsmanlike
player of the team. McLellan along
with the coaches, challenged the
team to play the last 35 minutes with
no regrets and this proved to be the
difference.
Brussels came out with a new-
found energy and it was not long
before midfielder Robert Cochrane,
who was named earlier in the day is
the most improved player of the
team, tied the game.
Brussels dominated the entire
second half and it was only due to a
couple of excellent saves by the
Drayton keeper that the game was
still tied with five minutes to go, but
finally, the Brussels attack proved to
be too much for the Drayton squad,
when Tiffin scored his- second
marker of the game off of a set play
from a free kick that was taken by
Corbett.
This goal combined with the
excellent defensive play of Ang
Sand, Trevor McArter, and Laurie
Grobbink proved to be enough as the
game ended with Brussels winning
3-2.
"I couldn't be happier for this
team", stated Beaven. "They came
out in the second half and proved
without any doubt that they certainly
deserved the championship."
"I also just want to say thank you
to the parents of these players. It was
an honour to be the coach of such an
excellent group of young people.
Proof of this was demonstrated at the
end of the tournament as it was their
kids who stayed around and helped
clean up."
"I also want to let the entire
Brussels community know that they
should be proud of this team as they
represented the community in fine
fashion, and I encourage you to
come out next year to cheer the
Brussels teams on."

from Williamson and Rinn. Jenny
McDonald and Cassandra Uyl set up

easily placed them first" after round-
robin play.
Serni-finals placed Lucknow
_against Goderich and Blyth against
Clinton for the second time in the
tournament. While Blyth got on the
scoreboard first with a goal by
Alcorn assisted by VanAmersfoort
and Bouman, -Clinton came on
strong and tied it 1-1.
After some fine tuning and pep-
talking at half time Blyth was ready
to play the second half and was
rewarded with two goals by
VanAmersfoort on a corner kick and
Uyl assisted by Carter and Jessica
Wheeler.
The final score was 3-1 which
earned Blyth the right to play in the
final game against Lucknow who
had defeated Goderich 2-0.
This game brought back memories
On Wednesday; Aug. 5, Brussels
U-9s travelled to Jacksonville Park
in Listowel to play against the sixth-
place Listowel I.
During the first half, the teams
were evenly matched. Several great
saves were made by Brussels' goalie
Austin Stephenson. Helping the
goalie was Jason Clarke on defense
who stopped several scoring
opportunities.
Despite a terrific team effort,
however, Listowel slipped one by
Stephenson.
In the second half Brussels fought
back and put the pressure on with
attempts to score by Brock McLean,
Tre Sanderson, Tori Kellington and
Clarke. Lane Sebastian played solid
in net, assisted greatly by
Stephenson on defense. Adam
Lindsay played one of his best
games of the season using his quick
footwork and speed to turn around
several plays at mid-field by the
Listowel team.
Finally after several close scoring
opportunities from corner kicks, it
was Clarke who put one past the
Listowel goalie to tie the game with
a final score of 1-1.
On Saturday, May 8, the U-9s
travelled to Wallace Park outside
Listowel to play against Listowel II.
The Blyth Festival's annual golf
tournament, sponsored by State
Farm Insurance, is set for Friday,
Aug. 27 at Woodland Links golf

of golf, dinner, and prizes for
everyone.

golfers to win hole-in-one prizes
including a golf vacation in Scotland
for two, a cruise for two, $10,000
cash or a set of golf clubs and a golf
hag. Great prizes have been received
Despite their efforts, Brussels was
unable to score a goal and were
outplayed by ListoWel.
Later that same day, Brussels
faced off against the first-place
Newton I team.
Brussels got their act together,
playing their positions much better
and playing more skillful soccer.
The "girl power" forward line of
Kirstin Pipe, Charity Nonkes and
Leah Davidson had a lot of fun
trying to move the ball up the field
against the undefeated Newton team
with some success.
Unfortunately there were no goals
in the cards for Brussels and the
squad was defeated.
Sebastian and Stephenson shared
the duties in net and both showed
improved skills since the beginning
of the season.
Other valuable team members
included: Heather Bone, Tori
Cardiff, Terran De Lauria, James
Johnston, and Katelyn McKay.
The U-9s ended their season with
a game against their parents on
Wednesday, Aug. 11 followed by a
presentation of medallions and a
social time.
The team is coached by Rose
Kellington, Murray Bone and Erica
Koch.

The Blyth U-18 girls soccer
tournament was held from Saturday,
July 10 - Thursday, July 15 on the
Sparling's fields in Blyth.
Competition was fierce but the girls
proved themselves to be topnotch
throughout the entire tournament.
Beginning with a match against
Clinton, Blyth came up big with a
0 win with goals scored by Erica
Sturzenegger from a nice corner kick
by Lauren Bouman, Kerissa Van
Amersfoort from Kali Alcorn who
intercepted a goal kick from the
opposition's goalie, then Jenna Rinn
and Charlotte Worsell set up Lisa
Carter for the third goal.
VanAmersfoort scored her second of
the night on a free kick.
The second game saw Blyth
matched up against Goderich.
Wanting to be first after the round-
robin play, Blyth needed to win, and
win they did. They outdid Goderich
5-0. Alcorn scored two, one on a
penalty shot, the other assisted - by
VanAmersfoort. Jennifer Williamson
Teams in
The conclusion of last weekend's
Londesborough Mite tournament
left much to celebrate as both
Londesborough teams made it to the
final rounds.
Six area softball teams worked
hard and played hard during the one-
day event on Saturday.
Players from Seaforth, Benmiller,
Holmesville, Varna and of course
both Londesborough E and V teams,
woke with eager smiles and were
pumped full of energy ready and
waiting to begin the day.
After a game of hard hits, fast
running and great catches, it was the
Seaforth team that took home the A
championship trophy after they beat
Benmiller.
Despite homeruns, amazing saves
and smart plays, the Londesborough
E team lost to Varna in a nail-bitting
B championship game.
Londesborough V proved its
of last year's intense final game in
the tournament where Blyth and
Lucknow fought for the
championship.
After competitive play in the first
half, the score remained 0-0.
However, Blyth, remembering the
sweet taste of victory last year,
regrouped at halftime to work
together to score. The second half
saw the play going back and forth
but Blyth demonstrated their control
of the field and were rewarded with
a goal by Jenna Taylor, assisted by
Wheeler and Rinn.
Although Lucknow continued to
put the pressure on, especially as the
game neared its end, the defence
held strong and Blyth proved to be
the stronger team winning 1-0.
Blyth was rewarded with the
North Huron Soccer League
championship for the second year
running. The girls played an
awesome game. Coach Herb
VanAmersfoort said, "It was a real
pleasure being able to coach these
girls again this year. They deserve
the championship for their
dedication and hard work. We had a
great season and an even better
tournament.
Members of the team were
VanAmersfoort, Rinn, Taylor,
Jessica Nethery, Wheeler, Uyl,
Worsell, Krista Shortreed, Alcorn, E.
Sturzenegger, Andrea Sturzenegger,
